p is for phishing

…. or look mom I’m buying guns on the Internet!

Yes I reported it to PayPal’s phishing email. I don’t know that they actually do anything about it but I did report it. The funny thing is they sent it to an email not affiliated with PayPal.

And then I reported the emails as spam and blocked the email addresses.

This is a PSA to look carefully at things you receive, especially if you didn’t order guns on the Internet. The way this whole email was phrased and the fact that it used an email address not associated with PayPal was my dead giveaway other then of course the fact that I don’t buy guns on the Internet.

And yes, I have pretty high spam filters, etc. but these happen to get through because they were clever enough that they looked legitimate.

Happy Friday!

  1. Just before you posted this about fake paypal,
cell phone showed this: SCAM? 771-218-8155 … this was the first time my cell phone did warn me
My call was a scam. But I decided to look up just the area code:771

“Area codes 202 and 771 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for Washington, D.C. The red area is the District of Columbia, served by area codes 202 and 771.”

So…I looked up area code 877

The 877 area code is not associated with a specific location. Instead, the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), which includes the United States, Canada, parts of the Caribbean Sea, and other nearby regions, designates it as a toll free area code.

And this is what AI had to say about the area code 877.
As is the case with any toll-free code, 1-877 numbers are mostly used by businesses that rely on attracting as many phone calls from their clients as possible. Other companies may also have use for these types of numbers, but they are mostly associated with, for example, call centers and customer service lines…
(written with such polite deception… and never mentioned NANP)

From me, Thank you for the scam warning!
