save oxford police.

I learned recently that Oxford Borough wants to get rid of the police department. There is no substitute for local policing. And this is an area that stretches way beyond just the little town of Oxford, Pennsylvania, and this police force also offers mutual aid and back up to other local police departments.

So essentially, some in Oxford Borough I guess on the borough council are feeling cheap? This was topic of half of a show on WCHE recently with Barry Dee. I believe it starts at about the 28 minute mark.

I have no horse in this race and I just think this dog doesn’t hunt.

Oxford Borough wants to replace their police force with state police. In my humble opinion, the state police are already stretched with all of the other municipalities they have to deal with in Chester County alone. What Oxford Borough could do, is share the burden among neighboring municipalities, and have a regional police force. Just like WEGO – Westtown/East Goshen.

If Oxford had any intellectual curiosity as a borough council, they could talk to people in other communities who have to rely on the state police, and if you go over to Charlestown Township, for example. They will tell you that it’s sometimes pretty hard. They don’t get coverage on roads that are problematic with speeding and accidents, and then there is the famous resident of Charlestown Township who is still missing and the state police really haven’t said anything in a LONG time (Anna Maciejewska.)

A recent meeting occurred in Oxford and I got feedback:

Good evening – sorry ahead of time if this is a long message 😁

…Approval for this project an that project, storm drain here storm drain there, road repair an property owners to put sidewalks in pedestrian areas. Same ol’ stuff….

Confirmation an approval after arbitration for Oxford Borough Police Department’s raise request they been fighting for since April 2024. Their contract now goes to 2026. I don’t know how officers feel about new contract. So for now there is one win for Oxford Borough Police Department and residents and that means they stay here until 2026.

Doesn’t mean however, the Anti-Oxford police unknown council members won’t try outsourcing in the meantime.

The cost/study documents still haven’t arrived back to borough council.

That study is the cost of keeping Oxford PD and making them a regional dept in Oxford with 5 surrounding twsps support an joining -VS-outsourcing borough police to another current regional dept to come into patrolling Oxford.

Sigh…like anything else that happens in Oxford it can’t be normal. They have to be rotten to anybody who wants to change or is trying to stick up for someone else. Oxford is one of those municipalities I will never understand.

People are literally being told around the borough not to interact with the people who wish to save the police force. Because it’s Oxford, I have to ask does that mean intimidation and harassment? Again, you can’t prove anything right now, but people sure are chattering in that part of the world, aren’t they?

The people raising awareness for saving the local police force wanted to have a table like other vendors do at some Halloween parade coming up this evening. They were told they were not allowed because they were political. All they want to do is save their police force. Please explain how that is political? It’s about the police force. It’s about community.

So trick-or-treat Oxford Borough and if you try to tell people they can’t wear Save Oxford Police T-shirts, you are basically violating rights. And if anyone has that happen in Oxford if they wear a T-shirt I want to hear about it. I also think people should take pictures of people wearing the Save Oxford Police T-shirts.

I have also heard through my grapevine that there are people with businesses in Oxford, who would like to be supportive and show a Save Oxford Police sign and they’re kind of getting a message from someone they can’t do that and why? They tried to do that in Ardmore in Lower Merion Township years ago with merchants who wanted to support the Save Ardmore Coalition stopping eminent domain by having a sign in their window. Yeah didn’t work out so well. Lots of signs went up.

Newsflash to Oxford Borough: eventually people get tired of being told what to do, especially when it comes to something as basic and as nice as supporting their local police department.

My bottom line on this entire issue is this borough is being shortsighted. I don’t think they realize how ineffectual and possibly unsafe for people it could become if they lose their police department. Also, who says the state police really wants to have to babysit another municipality in Chester County, anyway?

Oxford Borough wants to try to tell you this is a political issue. It’s not. Saving a police department is all about community. Our local police departments are part of our communities.
