a thonning they will go…
Yesterday the kids of Thon/PSU were all over. Truthfully, while I respect what they are trying to do they make me incredibly nervous dancing in and out of lanes of traffic on what are in fact highways. Especially when they do it at dusk.
Anyway, here are two of the faces of Thon. Wish I had gotten the photo of the Thonner next to the guy dressed in the giant pink and white mattress costume around Exton.

groupon gone wrong
I just got a freaking Groupon for BOTOX. Wow, apparently it is right up there with half priced take out food. It’s botulism. If that doesn’t skeeve you out, nothing will. But in the 19th century, women used arsenic to make their face appear more white and translucent. (What you think the play Arsenic and Old Lace had no inspiration from real life?) The down side is they shortened their life span and often poisoned themselves and others.
I prefer my face unfrozen, thanks. But throughout the centuries women have been doing dumb things to make them look more appealing including:
- Lovely ladies of the Middle East used to grind up lead – which causes metal poisoning – and apply it to their lashes, eyebrows and eyelids.
- Women in Edwardian England would gladly swallow a slimy tapeworm to keep themselves slim and trim. The parasite would digest most of the food the women ate, and it also destroyed their health.
- Beautiful blonde highlights in the hair were achieved by Venetian ladies who poured lion urine on their tresses before sitting out in the sun.
- Italian ladies of the past used to apply deadly nightshade to enhance their eyes. The poison dilates the pupils and makes people’s peepers look enormous and glowing.
- In the England of Queen Elizabeth I, great beauties of the time owed the rich red color of their lips to bugs. The squashed remains of insects were rubbed on the mouth for a ruby-red luster. Face painting with white lead powder was also popular in Elizabeth’s time. The beauty secret caused the premature demise of a number of 16th century lovelies.
I remember when I was a media relations volunteer for the RNC2000, I watched Larry King come up an escalator after disembarking from a train. He looked like a praying mantis his face was pulled so tight from plastic surgery and what not. I also saw Joan Rivers in an office in NYC once. She was enough to give you nightmares. She was like grandma of Chuckie.
Having lived on the Main Line for enough years, I am always amazed by who is getting what work done. Some of these women are so carved up and frozen with puffy over injected lips that they look like frozen death mask caricatures of themselves. I even saw a woman yesterday out here in Chester County who looked like the crypt keeper, she had obviously had work, but somewhere it had fallen short and she was a very odd-looking late middle-aged woman. She might have even been around 70. (Of course she is nothing compared to the woman who got out of her car dressed to the nines from the waist UP, but from the waist down had dirty ripped Capri pants and walked into the bank to use the ATM machine in BARE feet. It wasn’t THAT warm yesterday.)
Now what does this have to do with what I usually write about? Nothing, it’s just a pet peeve. I am not saying that women should let themselves go and buy orthopedic oxfords and slip a cardigan or shawl around their shoulders and be done with it, but whatever happened to aging gracefully? Age appropriate matters in adults too.
As a breast cancer survivor I have taken a new look at a lot of things women do to beautify. I read the labels now to try to keep parabens and sulfates down to a dull roar. It made me rethink hair color. I use all natural deodorants like Tom’s or the Crystal as a result now.
Pre-breast cancer I did not color my hair much or often, and when I did it was a semi-permanent choice of color. But I can’t seem to get my head wrapped around all the chemicals in hair color and putting them back into my body, so this summer I decided to just stop coloring my hair. I have seen some amazing looking women lately doing this, so I figured why not? Am I ashamed of my age? No, because I am not old. But I am not 18 anymore, either. So now my hair is flecked here and there with shining strands of silver.
Will my vanity eventually get the better of me? I do not know. I suppose it is what drives these women in part to inject poison into their skin and get those awful peels that make them look like shiny moist glass bottles. And maybe they don’t find it disturbing that their faces are in effect frozen, making them look like blank staring department store mannequins, but I do.
We don’t have to go to hell in a hand basket as women (or men too for that matter), but the whole idea of discount botulism like discount cupcakes and discount take out food? Yikes. I think a Groupon for Botox is just a Groupon gone wrong.
What happened to aging gracefully? And age appropriate in adults? It is not so simplistic as to say all these men and women choose these options to simply look their best. I think it also has a lot to do with massive insecurity and societal misperceptions.
I am not perfect. Do I wish I looked 18 some days? of course, it is human nature. But truthfully? I am much happier now than I was at that age. And yes I have my vanities. My hair is one of them. But living life well doesn’t mean you have to be sliced and diced and hopped up on injectables does it? Is that how we define ourselves? I mean is it just me or do you get annoyed by women who complain about wrinkles yet used to baste in the sun like a rotisserie chicken indiscriminately?
Or have you ever been around men and women who are obsessed by how large or small someone is? I know a few women who are just flat-out obsessed with the appearance of others, especially when it comes to things like weight and make-up. If a woman is not unnaturally thin with full frontal make-up at all times she is letting herself “go”. Yet I am amused by those who are the largest critics because I think they would crumple up and die if you challenged them on their hair color, or say their choice in lipstick colors. And when it is a man doing the criticizing and you look at them and see the 1970s is calling and wants their haircuts back, and you wonder why some people wear so much plaid, you just have to shake your head in wonderment.
Poor little Groupon….I am afraid it has opened up Pandora’s box.
Any thoughts here? Natural or artificial? Do you appreciate who people are for who they are or do you only appreciate them by the cumulative dollars they have spent on themselves?
Weigh in.
do you pinterest? what do you pin?
I play around on Pinterest. It is to me like a giant look book/inspiration board. I love the cool photography I find, along with decorating and cooking ideas and beautiful or zany fashion to gawk at. Recently I started following people who follow gingerbread house bakers because First Friday Main Line has a gingerbread house contest December 7th.
For a lot of people, the jury is still out on Pinterest. I think it is fun.
They just started secret boards – each user gets two or three I think. It means only you and whomever you invite can see the board.
So if you are on Pinterest, let me know how YOU pin on Pinterest. (and post the link to your Pinterest page if you would like!)
You can follow me at pinupgirlPA (yes it struck me as a funny play on words)
chester county vatican?
Ok, I am sorry but it is a little freaky amusing to discover that Immaculata has its OWN zip code.
I used to joke about Hershey’s Mill being the retirement Vatican of Chester County because it is like its own city-state with its own roads, security (complete with sirens), personal entrance to the mall where the Giant is, etcetera.
So I read a blip on Malvern Patch about Immaculata and their acceptance letter tweets and went to check out their twitter page. It says:
Immaculata, PA? HUH? It might be Malvern, some call it Frazer, but is Immaculata in fact Chester County’s true Vatican? In Chester County do all institutions get their own zip codes? Wow Cabrini College and Eastern University, which are in Radnor and St. David’s PA respectively are going to get jealous and make demands on Delaware County! Do we think Cabrini, PA and Eastern, PA have nice rings to it?
Immaculata lists their legal mailing address as: Immaculata University | 1145 King Road, Immaculata, PA. 19345
So does that mean that people who live in the residential neighborhoods along King Road adjacent to the school don’t live in Malvern, PA (zip code 19355) they live in Immaculata, PA (zip code 19345)? So does Immaculata have their own post office and police force and fire departments and all the other services that create a city-state, borough, township? Where is their town hall? When do they have supervisor meetings?
Is this because Cheyney has their own zip code too?
I find this all VERY confusing. Hope the schools have paid for this privilege as opposed to taxpayer dollars funding their independent zip code. With the U.S. Postal service in such a shambles is this in fact just a way for them to generate revenue? But again, what about those people near Immaculata, on the same road and in the same area as Immaculata who think they live in Malvern, PA East Whiteland Township?
Are they in fact living in Immaculata, PA?
But hey, maybe if they are handing out zip codes I can apply for one and we can all live in chestercountyramblings, PA? It might be fun and there would be lots of great recipes and photos of barns!!
Are we to assume vanity zip codes are the new vanity plate?
Happy Friday people!
in case you thought things couldn’t get more strange in tredyffrin….
So in the end will we discover that John DiBuonaventuro had the approval of all his fellow supervisors regarding his infamous September letter in Tredyffrin? Will he write a personal note back to Sam Stretton who is representing Pattye and sent Tredyffrin a letter ?
Before I get to the crux of this post, as far as background check out article by Rich Ilgenfritz of Main Line Media News on November 5, 2012, and post by Pattye on November 2nd. Also check out post by Pattye on November 4th.
So Tredyffrin has as their mouthpiece it seems the solicitor Vincent Donohue, who paints such a rosy picture of Tredyffrin and how the residents are treated that many can’t help but wonder has he actually been there? I also wonder why we have not heard from Tredyffrin resident/Radnor Township ex-pat/Tredyffrin Manager Bill Martin? Where is he on all of this or is he somewhere in the Tredyffrin Township Building hiding under his desk? (Don’t laugh, I heard a story once of someone in Tredyffrin hiding under their desk and why couldn’t it happen?)
Anyway, my eyes are popping because of this article I just finished reading in Main Line Media News:
Majority of Tredyffrin supervisors may not have approved DiBuonaventuro letter posted to website

rilgenfritz@mainlinemedianews.com
It might appear that a majority of the Tredyffrin Board of Supervisors did not see or approve a controversial letter that a Tredyffrin Township supervisor posted on the municipal website in September, according to an open records request made by a local media outlet.
Crikey! They aren’t riding the train to a new station in Paoli, these people seem to be riding the un-sunshine friendly crazy train don’t they?
So what does that mean if this was not in fact approved by a legal quorum/majority of supervisors? What are any additional implications involving the former Tredyffrin Township Manager ?
How does John DiBuonaventuro get away with something like this?
Sign me confused.
Here is Pattye’s post on the topic. She continues to be a lady about this. I bet Tredyffrin wishes this would go away, but what is that phrase? Truth will out?
Re Personal Letter on Government Website — Did Tredyffrin Supervisor DiBuonaventuro receive approval from his fellow supervisors?
Posted on November 8th, 2012 5:32 PM by Pattye Benson
Did John DiBuonaventuro actually have approval from fellow supervisors before using government resources and government letterhead to post his personal letter
of September 5 on the government’s website? The answer to that question is not entirely clear, and the answer also depends on whom you ask.
As the resident targeted in DiBuonaventuro’s diatribe to the citizens of Tredyffrin Township, I was very interested to read the Main Line Media News article, “Majority of Supervisors may not have approved DiBuonaventuro letter posted to website”
. In the article, Rich Ilgenfritz explains that the newspaper filed an open records request with Tredyffrin Township asking for all information pertaining to DiBuonaventuro’s letter on the township website. However, it is interesting that MLMN only received one record; an email from DiBuonaventuro to Patricia Hoffman, executive secretary for Tredyffrin Township….
One of several troubling unanswered questions in regards to DiBuonaventuro’s personal use of the township website, is did he act alone? Or, … was there discussion (approval) from the other members of the Board of Supervisors. In her response to my question on this matter, Gleason stated the following in her email dated September 7:
“ … In answer to your question, it is unusual to post a statement from an individual Supervisor, but given the inaccurate and derogatory statements and innuendo publicly made about John DiBuonaventuro, I decided to approve the posting of the letter on the Township website. In this case, he was the subject of baseless public speculation simply because he is a Tredyffrin Supervisor. The circumstances justified the use of the website to publicly defend him, carrying with it the implicit endorsement of the Township to the accuracy of his statements. The Chairman of the Board of Supervisors and the Township Solicitor agreed that it was appropriate for the letter to go on the website.”
Gleason’s email states that the use of the government’s website by DiBuonaventuro carried with it the “implicit endorsement of the Township”. She further states that the Chairman [Kichline] and the Township Solicitor [Vince Donohue] agreed the letter was appropriate for the website. But did Kichline really see the actual letter?…Subsequent to DiBuonaventuro’s letter going on the website, there has been no public statement from the other 6 supervisors on this matter, except by Kichline who said that the Board would work on a website policy. Why the silence from the other supervisors? Privately, some of the supervisors have told citizens that they never saw the letter and some have stated that they would not have approved of the letter on the government’s website. Why don’t the supervisors own these opinions in public?….Another interesting thing to note on this email is that there was a private meeting of 3 supervisors – DiBuonaventuro, Kristen Mayock and Kichline. Why was Mayock involved but none of the other supervisors? As chair of the BOS, I understand the rationale behind Kichline attending the meeting but it is unclear if she actually attended or not. Mayock and Kichline are the two attorneys on the Board – was that the reason behind their request to attend this meeting? And it should also be noted that DiBuonaventuro states in this email, that he has approval from the solicitor Vince Donohue for the letter on the website. Everyone seems to be in agreement that Donohue saw and approved the letter – DiBuonaventuro, Kichline and Gleason all state that Donohue approved the letter. Interesting that this short email is all that is contained in the files in regards to DiBuonaventuro’s letter. Just interesting…..Supervisor Mike Heaberg read a statement in regards to the website policy which suggested that there would be a policy presented at the November 19 Board of Supervisors meeting. It was unclear whether or not the public would be permitted input into the website policy. Public input could prove important when you read the response from the township solicitor
Vince Donohue to my attorney Sam Stretton… (click here to read all of Pattye’s post)
This whole scenario still smells rotten. What else can you say except are the residents of Tredyffrin REALLY being served? Seems to me this twisted Chester County Kingdom needs an overhaul, doesn’t it? Darn good thing that Tredyffrin and West Vincent aren’t next to each other, right? (But if Tredyffrin was it would just be more opportunity for certain people to accuse more people of being “Chickenman”, right? After all, as I here told you aren’t anyone until you are accused of being Chickenman, huh?)
Pattye, keep on keeping on. Truth will out. Truth will out.
