fake cancer fundraisers piss me off.

cancer faker

I was diagnosed with breast cancer a little over 8 years ago.  I had surgery, I went through treatment, and have been lucky so far to survive. Other friends have not been so lucky with breast and other cancers.

I was also lucky that  although honestly it took me a few years to pay off my treatment bills, that I was able to do it.  Cancer is expensive. I was lucky, but it also was not easy every month making payments until the debt was finally gone.

I have donated to cancer fundraisers on occasion. Not every one that crosses my path, but when I know someone does need help, I try to pay it forward.  I did it recently for a woman who is not a friend, but I knew she went through an actual hideous double mastectomy at a hospital I wouldn’t have a hangnail in, and her husband has had a recent surgery and they have kids and actually need the help.

But this item that broke in the news? HOLY CRAP! ANOTHER CANCER FAKER!

A Chester County, Pennsylvania, woman is accused of pretending to have cancer, impersonating a doctor and nurse and lying about her own father dying in an elaborate scheme to steal thousands of dollars from donors on GoFundMe and Facebook.

Jessica Cornell Smith, 32, of Uwchlan Township, was arrested Monday and charged with theft by deception-false impression and receiving stolen property.

Earlier in the year, Smith created a GoFundMe and Facebook page claiming she was diagnosed with Hereditary Nonpolyposis Colorectal Cancer (HNPCC) and was receiving treatment from oncology specialists at the “Abraham Cancer Center” at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The actual name of the facility is the Abramson Cancer Center.

Through her pages, Smith claimed she was facing tremendous medical bills, travel costs and other payments related to child care and missed work. She also said her insurance coverage held a $15,000 deductible.

I mean freaking for real???

I went and pulled the deactivated Go Fund Me  Love the Galmour Kitty fake cancer photos:

Despicable.

Utterly despicable.

I want to know who helped her fake the chemo lounge photos?

Now I want to give a shout out to citizen journalists from The Ever Evolving Truth.  Because given what I am checking out, they helped expose this.

These True Crime citizen journalists have podcast after podcast on this grifter.

But this is a story that will keep all media and citizen journalists busy for a while. Because what about the stuff covered by Brian Hickey in Philly Voice? Astounding:

And OMG this:

scaniety

I am appalled.  Not sure if the photo of the MRI machine is from Penn Medicine at Exton is real or not but Penn Medicine in Exton? I go there sometimes for scans, MRIs, and mammograms.  If she was there how did she fake it? As someone who is alive because of Penn Medicine, trust me their forms have forms. And you have to show ID and all sorts of stuff all of the time.

Jesus.  How do people do things like this? And she has kids? How do people get this way? Do they just suddenly wake up with the idea of scamming people?

Here is the Inquirer with some other details of this cancer grifter/scammer:

Philadelphia Inquirer: Chester County woman charged with faking cancer in $10K fund-raising scam
by Aubrey Whelan, Updated: November 5, 2019- 12:43 PM

The balls on this woman. There is a special place in hell for cancer fakers. And they have no idea what it is to truly fight cancer let alone go through treatment.  They have no idea how this disease affects the friends and family of those affected.

Sign me gobsmacked . Thank you to those chasing this story (especially the citizen journalists), which has now even made the Daily Mail a UK publication.

oh just get out there and vote

Tomorrow is Election Day.

Election Day is your chance as an American to be heard.

Tomorrow is one of those off-year elections where there is not a presidential election attached. It doesn’t mean it’s not important. It’s important.

To those of us who live in Chester County it’s important local races, county-wide races, and judicial races.

Yes I do express at times who I feel is a good candidate and who I feel is a poor candidate and I’ve done that this election season. And no one has to like my opinion, it’s my opinion because it’s what I’m thinking about.

I’m just asking you all to think period.

There are issues with both major political parties. Hello? That’s why I became a registered Independent.

Tomorrow is the general election. I would be happy to vote in the primaries but that’s what I gave up for the ability to be an Independent. Other states have open primaries, Pennsylvania is not so progressive.

I believe in splitting my ticket because I think we are best served by balance not one party rule. One party rule is like the monarchy our founding fathers escaped from to found this country in the first place!

Get out and vote. Make your own decisions and be educated about it. Read the campaign finance reports.

Keep an eye on the birds of a feather of it all. And my other favorite, our wolves in sheep’s clothing, the politically expedient who become members of political parties they weren’t originally not because their belief system necessarily changed and they had an epiphany, but because it’s politically expedient to become something else to get what they want. That’s patently dishonest.

And remember the pipelines. Make them an election issue.

Peace out.

living and wandering in chester county

Sometimes you read things that just boggle your mind on social media. And today I saw something that I think needs to be discussed.

Chester County has a rich agricultural and equine history. Given the rampant development from one end of the county to the other, sometimes we forget that. And we can’t.

I have friends who have farms. I have friends who have horses. I have neighbors who have horses and other critters. It’s one of my favorite things about living out here because I love horses and when I was a kid I used to ride. And I will take photos. But I never trespass.

If an owner of a farm or a property invites me to be physically on the property, then I will visit. But I don’t go driving up their driveways or visiting with their animals without permission . When it comes to horses and farm animals they are valuable and these are people’s property as well as their pets.

This afternoon I saw something which should surprise me but doesn’t.

The other end of Morstein is very developed, so no horses. Kids like animals and I think that’s awesome.

But these farms, the ones that remain, they aren’t petting zoos. And all the comments that followed this post being left is what blew my mind versus the actual request. There were people actually encouraging this person to just drive up this farm’s driveway. As in just trespass.

You can’t do that. You need permission. There are all sorts of things involved here including liability. And trespassing. These animals are valuable. What if you spooked one? Or opened fences meant to remain closed and they got out? What if all of the animals aren’t kid friendly or stranger friendly?

I have run into these situations before as I have another friend who actually has had “photographers” doing photo shoots on her property without permission. Photo shoots of entire families who were complete strangers to my friends. These people would drive up park on their property and stage these photo shoots in front of their fields and barn.

Now if you’re doing a scenic drive through Chester County and you stop and take a photo from the road of a barn or animals or trees or fields, you are not trespassing you’re driving through. No one minds that kind of appreciation.

I have another friend who has a small farm who told me today that they have discovered people parking and hanging out in their back fields before who are total strangers. These people didn’t ask permission and that’s not OK.

I also know other people with working farms that run into this problem all the time.

I realize there are a lot of people out there that probably just don’t get that this isn’t OK. A lot of these people have limited experience with farms, and the animals found on them.

That is not to say I am Farmer in the Dell, because I am obviously not. But we have to respect these people, their properties and animals, and utilize common sense.

Would you like to find some strange person in your driveway just wandering around? I’m thinking the answer to that is no. So please don’t encourage people to do that with regard to these farms.

It’s because of situations like this where people just stop and think they can wander around a farm that you see a lot of farms today with a lot of no trespassing signs. Far more than you ever saw in the past.

The other point to ponder is if people love farms and farm critters do much, why so many plastic mushroom developments?

But please… don’t wander onto farms without prior permission. It’s really not OK.

Thanks and happy Sunday!
