the power of ick in giant and other tales of grocery shopping

I shop at the Giant on Boot Road in West Chester.  The store is large and for the most part clean.  There are some issues here and there like the d’oh of it all when you find typos in signage throughout the store – usually that means the typos are in ALL Giant stores (like the one in the food court, see thumbnail at right just below.)

Some of the other issues involves attitude having to do with some of the people who work in the store. Most of the people are nice, but every now and again you find the people who need an attitude adjustment.  I find that some of the most frequent offenders are the staff members at Giant who run the cashiers and checkout for lack of a better description.  The supervisory or managerial staff that hover up front. The overseers of the front – and a lot of them act like a mean prison warden would in a made for TV movie.

Yesterday afternoon I was reminded of those people again, because for some reason they feel the need to throw their weight around in front of customers.  I had just finished paying for my order, and wished my cashier a Happy Thanksgiving if I did not see her again before the holiday.  She is one of my favorite cashiers and I think is very sweet and always helpful.

As I was wheeling my cart past the check out aisle next to the one I was leaving, one of the baggers who is developmentally challenged said to me that Thanksgiving wasn’t until next week.  So I smiled and explained to him I was wishing her a happy turkey day early in case I did not see her again.  He smiled, and seemed to like that idea.

Unfortunately my brief conversation with the bagger might have drawn attention to him because next thing I know, one of these supervisor types swooped down and did not ask him nicely or gently or in my mind even professionally to go out to the parking lot and retrieve carts, she barked at him to do this in a very nasty fashion.  Just because someone is emotionally or developmentally challenged it doesn’t mean you have to be harsh and mean while addressing them.  Especially in front of customers. Every customer (including myself) looked away in obvious discomfort.  And this is the second time since November 5th I have seen this behavior out of supervisory staff in this store in the same part of the store.

On November 5th when I was grocery shopping in the same store, this cute girl of high school age came and opened up another checkout aisle and took me from my aisle to wait on me.  This girl was so cute. And friendly and efficient too.  Well apparently in her zeal to provide actual customer service she must not have told the warden of the front of the store that day.

This cashier manager (see blurry photo below at left ) must not have closed out the drawer from the last cashier there or something and took this young girl to task in front of customers, myself included.  She yelled at and berated this young girl. 

Again, customers looked away and moved away because they were uncomfortable.  And the nice young girl being berated looked like she wanted the floor to swallow her up.  Neighboring cashiers shook their heads in disgust.  I spoke up and asked this supervisor or manager if that was her management style.  I further commented that I found it utterly unprofessional and just mean to do that to an employee in front of customers.  Truthfully, the store was not so busy that she couldn’t have simply asked that girl to finish up with me and come see her afterwards. I think this front of store warden was shocked I challenged her.  I did not care.  I did not know that young girl, but she did not deserve that treatment any more than the bagger yesterday.

This is behavior Giant that needs to be corrected.  If these are people who can’t manage other people and are in supervisory roles this needs to be revisited by corporate and proper managerial training applied.  As a customer why do I want to spend my money in a store where being a supervisor or manager is being a public bully?

Now another issue.  The one that actually inspired me to blog about Giant and can be seen in  the photo at top.

Yesterday I was doing some pre-Thanksgiving shopping.  I was in need of a  specific size canning jar for cranberry sauce as I make my own.  What I found next to the canning products skeeved me out.  Poison.  As in poisonous bug spray (Raid) and even worse: mouse and rat bait and traps.  NONE of this should be anywhere near products that have anything to do with food. Ick.

I have seen this before in ACME.  When I saw this in ACME a few years ago, corporate management actually agreed with me at the time and moved aisles around so that this poisonous stuff was next to cleaning products and away from food or anything that has to do with food.

Sorry but I think it is gross.  Sorry to pick on Boot Road Giant, but it is the grocery store I visit the most.

Here’s hoping they take a look at these issues, although I am not hopeful since when I bought the issue of publicly bullying employees in a supervisory position to Giant’s attention on November 5th they did not respond.

I would also like to know when they are going to get in the jugs of maple syrup again too.  It is not cost-effective to buy the smaller glass bottles. I really wish there was a Trader Joe’s out here some days.  Gateway and Ardmore are just far enough away to make it inconvenient.

chester county vatican?

Ok, I am sorry but it is a little freaky amusing to discover that Immaculata has its OWN zip code.

I used to joke about Hershey’s Mill being the retirement Vatican of Chester County because it is like its own city-state with its own roads, security (complete with sirens), personal entrance to the mall where the Giant is, etcetera.

So I read a blip on Malvern Patch about Immaculata and their acceptance letter tweets and went to check out their twitter page. It says:

Immaculata, PA? HUH?  It might be Malvern, some call it Frazer, but is Immaculata in fact Chester County’s true Vatican? In Chester County do all institutions get their own zip codes? Wow Cabrini College and Eastern University, which are in Radnor and St. David’s PA respectively are going to get jealous and make demands on Delaware County!   Do we think Cabrini, PA and Eastern, PA have nice rings to it?

Immaculata lists their legal mailing address as: Immaculata University | 1145 King Road, Immaculata, PA. 19345

So does that mean that people who live in the residential neighborhoods along King Road adjacent to the school don’t live in Malvern, PA (zip code 19355) they live in Immaculata, PA (zip code 19345)? So does Immaculata have their own post office and police force and fire departments and all the other services that create a city-state, borough, township?  Where is their town hall?  When do they have supervisor meetings?

Is this because Cheyney has their own zip code too?

I find this all VERY confusing.  Hope the schools have paid for this privilege as opposed to taxpayer dollars funding their independent zip code. With the U.S. Postal service in such a shambles is this in fact just a way for them to generate revenue? But again, what about those people near Immaculata, on the same road and in the same area as Immaculata who think they live in Malvern, PA East Whiteland Township?

Are they in fact living in Immaculata, PA?

But hey, maybe if they are handing out zip codes I can apply for one and we can all live in chestercountyramblings, PA?  It might be fun and there would be lots of great recipes and photos of barns!!

Are we to assume vanity zip codes are the new vanity plate?

new discovery in malvern: the eclectic market on king

So today after having way too much fun at the fall sale of Garage Sale Chic Chester County (and I have to tell you I scored the coolest vintage floor lamp) , I stopped in Malvern to drop off a bag of non-perishable food at Knots & Weaves in Malvern, who were collecting today for Chester County Food Bank during their in-store event.

I dropped off my stuff on the first floor where the rugs are (their rugs are GORGEOUS, but too expensive for me right now) and checked out the loft upstairs  that has some fun vintage items, stuff that wanted to be vintage, and some nice bits of fun costume jewelry.  But they did not have what I was seeking today, so I decided to check out another store I had never been in. From the window I saw a cool piece of Tole and thought it would  be more to my liking.

People, OMG I found a delightful little store that is a veritable treasure trove of vintage, antiques, quirky, and collectibles: The Eclectic Market run by a man named Tom Scofield. (his partner is named Mary Jo but I did not meet her)

 

 

SO much fun.  Very reasonably priced items.  I scored a pristine vintage wing chair for pennies.

There were a whole bunch of other things, that had I had the room and the change in my pocket would have gone home with me too!

The Eclectic Market is located at 148 East King Street, Malvern, PA 19355.  They also will consign items for customers if they have space.  They will definitely deal in price as they like to keep their inventory moving.

sandy storm photos – send them in for posting!

Hi there gentle readers.  I hope everyone has battened down the hatches for however Hurricane Sandy turns out?

I have a proposition for all of my readers: send me storm photos for posting.  I learned a long time ago that if you want to enact change, photos help. The photos you are CURRENTLY looking at are photos I took where I used to live in Lower Merion Township and one from Conshohocken. The snapped tree was courtesy of Irene last year.

I am happy to attribute photos, tell me who gets credit, and *MOST* importantly give me precise locations. Or I will post photos anonymously if you live in a municipality that has shall we say, issues?

I am particulalrly interested in photos where development may be occuring or is currently occuring or has just been completed. I am also interested in areas that chronically flood and often wait until the bitter end for help to arrive.

One spot  of particular curiousity which should not be overlooked by anyone is where the Borough of Phoenixville is building their over-priced new municipal hall.  I passed it last night while in Phoenixville and thought I should defininately put that location out there as a site for good storm photos because it always floods, doesn’t it? And correct me if I am wrong, but the plans for that needlessly overpriced new borough hall doesn’t really have proper flood remediation built in, does it?  Wasn’t that the plan where the plan is put the garage underneath so everyone’s cars drown and there is lots of potential litigation from that?  Anyway, I figure a way to preserve the taxpayer investment and future costs here is to have irrefutable proof that they need a real plan or they should stop and move sites.

Phoenixville has a fun downtown at night.  They need better parking and I notice they have the parking authority people out chalking tires on a Saturday night, and truthfully, most municipalities don’t do that.  They leave it as the police can tow people from certain zones and are done with it.  But then again, people tend to question how Phoenixville spends money – they spend way too much on a manager, they spend way too much on a school superintendant – seriously for a borough barely squeaking by in any economy they pay Main Line prices.

But enough picking on Phoenixville which always floods so badly, from Tredyffrin through to West Vincent and Oxford and wherever, if you have storm photos, or storm info, send it in.   Also feel free to leave comments about where the power is out and if roads are blocked.

Hopefully Sandy will be a non-event for Chester County.

My final note is DO NOT PUT YOURSELVES IN HARM’S WAY TO SEND ME PHOTOS. 

But do document flooding and damage.  It is helpful for getting things corrected so situations do not repeat themselves. I will also take Main Line storm photos if it will help any of you out there near where I used to live.

I realize that Chester County native son Bam Margera is like the second coming to a lot of residents, but no disrespect to them, I find that he has gone from local boy done good to problem child many wish would just go away.

Also, he’s not a child (although he undoubtedly influences many.). And I know a lot of people may have a lot to say that I am taking him to task on his latest not so funny bit of jackassery.

So what the heck did he THINK would happen when he posted a photo on twitter looking like he was pointing a gun at the head of an innocent PUPPY?

Hey Bam? Here’s the 411: I have never been a fan of your antics.  But it’s a big world out there and normally I can’t see what you do from my window.  But sooner or later, dude, you and your motley band of pranksters need to grow up and become contributing members of society.  Why can’t you use your celebrity for good?  Why is it every time you hit the news, or someone in your circle hits the news it is less than positive?

Is that how you see the world?  

I find this latest stunt, apology or no apology profoundly disturbing.  Personally I am thinking you should be making big whopping donations to Chester County SPCA and Main Line Animal Rescue if you are REALLY sorry.

Shaking my head in disgust at this one, and how embarrassing is it for Chester County that Bam has made the news from coast to coast on this? No, Bam, I would disagree.  All press is NOT good press and joking about animal cruelty is not funny. You are in the public eye, and like it or not have an obligation to NOT behave like a jackass once in a while.

Life gets busy, and I missed something I should have posted a couple of days ago, and I am truly sorry.  And I am torn how to present this, because no matter what is said, this is a very difficult subject. (So if you have a comment or clarification to what I am posting, PLEASE post a comment.)

When I was at East Goshen Day this summer, a friend of mine told me there was a rumor that East Goshen was dissolving their police force. Based on a letter a friend from outside Chester County forwarded to me, I would say it wasn’t just a rumor.

I am going to say that the only criticism I had with East Goshen prior to this was the fact that they neither stream their meetings on their website nor put them on Public Access TV. After getting this letter forwarded to me, I can see there might be a real need for meetings to be televised and/or streamed on their website.

Now as for the whole get rid of the local police department of it all, I find that distressing and this all  appears  at first look to have roots in some sort of labor dispute. Communities need their police force in addition to other first responders. This police force at present is like a twinned parish – it is shared with a neighboring municipality – Westtown. (Hence their name Westtown-East Goshen Regional Police Department.)

Having a community without a police department in my humble opinion is like trying to walk without legs. Maybe that is overly simplistic, but police aren’t an optional accessory in a community, they are a necessity. They know their residents, the roads, local ordinances, etc.

Additionally, I am always leery of paid consultants who come into a community to tell the community about where they live. My experience is, having seen millions of tax dollars flitter away in consultants’ pockets where I used to live, is ask the residents FIRST.  About EVERYTHING.

East Goshen, please do the right thing here. In this economy, spending $65,000 on an outside consultant doesn’t strike me as the best use of taxpayer dollars.  Please. It is as much as anything else, a question of public safety. I hope my post isn’t coming after some decision was made.  (and hopefully the idea of a pricey outside consultant was tabled for now?)  Of course (again), this is why, it would be helpful to stream meetings on the website or utilize public access television and broadcast the meetings.

I am posting what I currently see on East Goshen’s website, and my concern is it won’t reach everyone who lives in the township, so how else is it being distributed? See East Goshen Website:

Latest Township News & Events

The Board of Supervisors will be holding “Police Services Options  Workshops” at 7:00 pm on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month.  These workshops will be devoted solely to the review and discussion of  the police service options available to East Goshen Township. All  residents are invited to attend and encouraged to participate in the  discussions. Regular Township business will not be conducted at these  workshops.  By way of background, East Goshen and Westtown Townships  jointly created the Westtown East Goshen Regional Police Department  (WEGO) in 1981. WEGO is one of 35 regional police departments in  Pennsylvania and it provides police service to Thornbury Township on a  contract basis.  As the current labor agreement with the Police  Association is set to expire on December 31, 2013, it is incumbent on  the Board of Supervisors to explore all available options moving  forward. While WEGO has provided excellent service for over 30 years,  the substantial and ever-increasing cost of this service presents a  serious challenge for current and future residents of the Township as  the financial requirements of the current labor agreement are not  sustainable.  More information available here

Below my final comments is the letter I received. Please read it. Please let East Goshen know how you feel about this.  I find the trend of discussing getting rid of local police forces truly alarming. This is being tossed about in Malvern Borough too.  I found online an article Malvern Patch where it was reported August 20th with regard to East Goshen that :

East Whiteland Police Chief Eugene Dooley might soon be spending more time in East Goshen, according to a report in the Daily Local News….

The temporary assignment would come amid broader changes within Westtown-East Goshen Police Department. Thornbury Township has indicated it will not renew its contract with the regional force when it expires at the end of 2012.

Twitter user Leo Sinclair pondered the possible implications of Dooley’s temporary assignment, asking “First indication that East Goshen Twp plans to merge with East Whiteland Twp Police?”

So what is going on? Will our police be merging with yet another municipality as a cost saving measure? Or will East Goshen be served by State Police? Or a professional for hire don’t know what else to call it except rent a cops?

I doubt anything will happen quickly, but I definitely think a pause button is in order.

To be fair, my final comment is to the police force: if this situation has a basis in a contract/labor dispute I have not read up on, but I bet a lot has to do with benefits, as that seems to be a common theme today, where is a middle ground?  I mean no disrespect, but we live in a different world than our parents did and probably even different from when we grew up.   I am one of the millions of people who is self-pay on healthcare benefits.  It just is what it is – after all in the private sector not all companies provide benefits, and it is also the sole option in most cases for the self-employed.  My point is I manage.  And I managed even with breast cancer.

So as I am posting the letter below, I am going to make a plea to both sides to find a palatable middle point.  Because in this kind of tug of war, the ultimate losers are the residents. I hope both sides can resolve this and  save the police force.

September 4, 2012

Dear East Goshen Resident,

As you may know, members of the East Goshen Township Board of Supervisors have rejected a number of proposals to extend the contract for local police service provided by the Westtown – East Goshen Regional Police Department. Now, it appears that the Township is intent on dissolving our local police department. In fact, at tonight’s East Goshen Township Supervisors meeting, supervisors appear prepared to vote to recommend that the township pay a consultant $65,000 in taxpayer funds to study the township’s options with respect to future police services.

This action comes on the heels of a number of local residents speaking out in opposition to the Township’s proposal to eliminate our current regional police force. But our Township Supervisors appear unwilling to listen to the views or wishes of local residents. In fact, last week, supervisors said that the cost of surveying local residents for their opinion on whether to retain our current police force was “too expensive.”


In reality, sending a mailing to every household in the district with a response card would cost less than $6,500. That is less than 10 percent of the $65,000 that supervisors are on the verge of recommending be spent at tonight’s meeting to hire a consultant. Wouldn’t it make sense to determine whether residents support dissolving our police force before spending $65,000 on a consultant to tell them how to do it? Not only is this action fiscally irresponsible, it also seems to indicate that our elected officials do not care what “we the people” who they are elected to represent have to say.


In addition, the Westtown – East Goshen Regional Police Department is not aware of any Request for Proposals or public bidding process for the professional services that this consultant would provide. Failure to solicit proposals from multiple sources – who could potentially provide better value and expertise –raises serious ethical questions and would appear to violate government procurement policies due to the large size of the contract.


Please contact the township and supervisors prior to tonight’s meeting to tell them this $65,000 contract should be rejected until after local residents have been surveyed and the consulting services have been competitively procured through a public procurement process. I would also encourage you to share your concerns publicly at tonight’s meeting at 7 p.m. at the Township Building to help prevent this vote from occurring. They represent us and need to hear from us, so please pass this on to your friends and neighbors as well.

the best kind of summer afternoon

The best kind of summer afternoon involves sunny skies, low humidity, me and my camera.  Today was one of those days and I loved every minute of it!

My friend Pattye Benson asked for my help with the Tredyffrin Historic Preservation Trust’s 8th Annual Historic House Tour that is slated for September 22nd.

So off I went to photograph to my heart’s content.  What a glorious afternoon and what a fun tour this will be!

the mirror has two faces

Today in downtown West Chester as we were leaving the West Chester Growers Market we happened upon two groups protesting. Like the mirror has two faces, yet it is democracy at work that both sides can express a point of view like this on a public street.

However, that being said I feel the need to point out to the peace protestors below that since the dawn of this country, our soldiers have fought, bled, and died to protect our freedoms. Including your ability to protest and have your opinion.  So as you raise your peaceful banners and flash the peace sign at motorists, remember that.

And why any of you feel you need to do this on a hot summer day when half the world is on vacation utterly escapes me.

St. Agnes Day Room in West Chester serves the community selflessly.  They have been helping people in need since 1992 and they need your help.

What is prompting pointing out St. Agnes?  A note I received from a friend:

Michele Truitt  is doing a FOOD DRIVE for St. Agnes Day Room.  St. Agnes is seeing all time high numbers of kids in their day camp (feeding 80+ children breakfast & lunch every day, many of them are part of the district meal program during the school year) & the noon time meal program (130+ most days!). The needs are great during these last months of summer when people are not thinking “food drive”.

One of my friends in Narberth runs a food bank, and through First Friday Main Line, have worked on food drives to collect food for ElderNet in Bryn Mawr.

With regard to food, they should have a list on their website, but they do not (or I can’t find it).  Here is some of what they do:

  • 11,000 Breakfasts served – The poor and homeless receive a light breakfast and are able to begin their days in a caring and welcoming environment.
  • 18,000 Hot lunches served – Nourishing hot lunches provide sustenance and comfort to the most vulnerable in our community.
  • 3,000 Bags of groceries distributed to families in need – Our food pantry provides groceries to many hard working families and the elderly who cannot make ends meet.

If you are a farm, contact St. Agnes and ask them what they could use.  If you are a home gardener with extra fresh veggies or fruits, why not just contact St. Agnes and drop them off?  If you want to donate other things, think non-perishables – Parmalat milk (that doesn’t require refrigeration until opening), and here is a list from Narberth’s food bank that might help:
