death of a neighborhood: r.i.p. lisa drive in west whiteland.

All that is left are the memories. Once a vibrant and beloved neighborhood, now all that is left are the echoes of memories and photographs. R.I.P Lisa Drive in West Whiteland.

SuNOco / Energy Transfer / Mariner East are the architects of this tragedy. And the PA DEP gave a stamp of approval.

Given the age of the homes, one nearby resident aptly noted did the DEP take precautions for lead paint and potential asbestos or are those particles just going to be left to float in the air, lay in the soil, get into water? But do we think they all care? I do not.

This neighborhood was sacrificed for the god almighty profit of what we now know as Energy Transfer. In 2019, beleaguered residents 2 weeks to agree to the offer and move out back . And they had to sign NDA’s. These people would never have just compensation because all of what they lost was not monetary which would never matter to this company and too many elected officials. They lost their neighbors, their homes where they raised their families, etc. Those things cannot ever have a dollar amount placed on them.

I have written about this many times in the past and today I take a minute to remember a neighborhood. We should not be losing our neighborhoods and environment to this crap. Period.

Today more friends, acquaintances, and residents will be lending their voices and speaking truth to power over the scourge known as pipelines.

You see, this is day two of public hearings in West Chester that the PUC (Public Utility Commission) is holding on Mariner East. The pipelines are ruining where we call home and putting us ALL at risk.  Corporate greed putting lives at risk. We don’t benefit as residents.  We only assume risk and for what? So they can rape the land and ship dangerous things below our feet to places like Scotland that can blow us all to kingdom come, destroy our property values, pollute our drinking water wells and more?

Enough.  Enough. Enough. It’s well past time to get them out of our communities.

The Philadelphia Inquirer had the best headline in years late yesterday when they went to press with:

So to my Mama Bears and anti-pipeline warriors in West Chester today? Defend What You Love. Defend What We Love.

Today Thursday  is the second day of the hearing   at High St and Market St at the historic West Chester courthouse. I have no courtroom information. The hearing should just be getting underway now.

Sierra Club of Chester County is holding this meeting TOMORROW MARCH 10:

New pipelines crossing Chester County:
What can we do to protect our health and environment?

Thursday, Mar 10, 7:00 pm
West Chester Borough Hall
401 E. Gay St, West Chester, PA 19380

Learn and ask questions about:

  • pipeline safety
  • risk of environmental catastrophe
  • impact of increased gas infrastructure on climate change
  • options for homeowners living near pipeline right of ways
  • Speakers:

  • Lynda Farrell – Pipeline Safety Coalition
  • Eric Friedman – Concerned Delco Homeowner
  • Justin Wasser – Sierra Club, Dirty Fuels Campaign

There have been over 200 pipeline failures in the US, Sunoco has been responsible for 18 in PA.

Our concerns regarding the hazards of these pipelines to our environment and the safety of our citizens are compelling. They include compromise of air quality from the flare stacks, water pollution from leaking pipelines which cross many of our County’s streams, the increased risks of leaks and ruptures and the acceleration of climate change through the use of these fossil fuels. The already understaffed PA Department of Environmental Protection(DEP) has been charged with monitoring many of these hazards for which they are not equipped.

Lynda Farrell, the head of the Pipeline Safety Coalition, is the most qualified and experienced person in our County to address our concerns and what future action will be necessary to halt this pipeline proliferation. She has been involved in the fight since 2008 and has played a major role in educating our citizens including numerous landowners facing new pipelines crossing their property, frequently very close to their homes.
