worth noting: trying to find traffic solutions in bryn mawr and haverford in haverford township.

Before I moved to Chester County many years ago now, I lived in Lower Merion Township. I was in the Haverford neighborhood sandwiched between Montgomery and Lancaster Avenues near the Haverford School, which was across Lancaster Avenue as a matter of fact, it had a nickname called “the island.”

This wasn’t the north side (as in other side of Montgomery Avenue or the Merion Cricket Club side) of Haverford neighborhood I grew up in that had then, and still has today insanely soaring real estate prices. This was just a pretty transitional neighborhood close to the Haverford train station, where you could easily walk to both Ardmore and Bryn Mawr.

The neighborhoods across Lancaster Ave from me were actually in Haverford Township. That used to confuse people to think Haverford Township came to there, but it did and it still does. It’s a county and municipal line, and five points in Bryn Mawr is also two counties, but three municipalities.

One of the best things about my then neighborhood was you could walk a relatively short distance to get access to the Haverford Nature Trail. It was awesome. I used to walk myself and my dogs over there once, if not twice a day. When I first moved into the neighborhood, you had to move quickly but you could safely cross Lancaster Avenue via North Buck Lane (Lower Merion) on my side and Buck Lane (Haverford) on the other side. By 2007, it really wasn’t safe to do that. Traffic was bad but unwanted development was starting to march through, which would ultimately increase traffic in my opinion.

In 2007, we watched as lovely houses were torn down for McMansion-ish dwellings on Rugby Road in the Haverford Township side of Bryn Mawr. It was when many of us started talking about the need for the Municipalities Planning Code of the Commonwealth of PA (MPC) to be comprehensively overhauled to help protect suburbs and exurbs.

The day after Christmas in 2008, or Boxing Day, my neighborhood watched as a developer tore down houses, including one of which was technically historical. It was initially for a condo building. Eventually it became “carriage homes” / townhouses. I will note that even today, the structures don’t truly fit into the neighborhood and in my opinion still complement nothing much. Oh, and they still overlook Classic Auto Body. I still can’t imagine paying Main Line prices to overlook a couple of body shops as there is still one I think across Lancaster Avenue from Classic Auto Body.

In 2007, the then editor of Main Line Media News who before his death was editor of The Daily Local penned an editorial that still resonates today about development:

Neighbors of these developments came together, organized, and attended so many meetings during the early to mid 2000s. In some ways it helped, but in other ways it was soul crushing to see development that had little to do with the area itself taking over and not necessarily being harmonious with the neighborhood invaded. In late 2007, I wrote an editorial for Main Line Media News celebrating these neighbors groups:

In case you missed it, this is why I get upset about a lot of the truly wanton development in Chester County. I lived it, in part, before. This is in part why I know in my heart Malvern Borough has made a mistake with that absurdly named Duffryn Mawr across King from the Flying Pig.

But I digress.

Why am I revisiting this? Because in my opinion, traffic issues we saw before the development projects I have mentioned in Bryn Mawr and Haverford even happened, have now morphed into a need for Haverford Township to rethink the configuration of what will always be small streets to protect the community and pedestrians.

The Board of Commissioners will hold its monthly public meeting on Monday, July 14. In the meantime, I wanted to share a few updates and reminders from around the Township.

Safe Streets Demonstration Project on Buck Lane

Within the next few weeks, Haverford Township will begin a Traffic Safety Demonstration Project on the 800 block of Buck Lane (between Railroad Avenue and Panmure Road), as part of the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program. 

Key features include:

  • Converting Buck Lane to one-way northbound travel (Railroad to Panmure) to reduce southbound cut-through traffic and improve pedestrian and bike safety.
  • Reconfiguring the roadway for one lane of traffic, a buffer, and a protected multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Temporarily eliminating on-street parking on the block during the project.

During peak times, 65–75 vehicles per hour will be rerouted, but traffic studies suggest minimal impact on surrounding roads. The Township is coordinating with local schools to adjust transportation routes.

It’s so weird to think that part of Buck Lane will be one way, but I applaud Haverford Township for seeking solutions. When we tried to get traffic calming in our Lower Merion neighborhood back in the late 90s to early 2000s before the development projects I have discussed here were begun, we only got so far and we got a municipal smack back.

The impetus was a hit and run of a neighborhood dog back then, and subsequent realization of how many little kids we had as well as pedestrians. We pushed for a traffic study and I believe that my then small street had a crazy number of something like over 1200 vehicle trips per day clocked.

Our neighborhood back then was a big cut through between Lancaster and Montgomery Avenues, and probably still is. We had neighborhood meetings called parlor meetings with township officials including the police in our living rooms. I remember this well, because I hosted the first meeting at that time in my own living room.

We looked at surrounding areas, and were particularly interested in something Radnor Township was doing back then: speed humps. As opposed to speed bumps. This was before 2006, but I don’t remember the exact date. It was before the current 10th Ward Lower Merion Commissioner in Lower Merion was elected. (He’s still there)

I remember speaking with traffic safety folks in Radnor to get speed hump information. They even gave me PennDOT information at that time.

But Lower Merion was having none of it. It got to the point where the Lower Merion Commissioners then introduced an ordinance to prohibit speed humps. They seemingly erased all evidence of this today because more recently they have selectively introduced speed humps in the township since that time. But I personally know that this happened as during the course of this all those years ago, I received a letter in the mail basically warning me off from asking for speed humps in my then neighborhood.

So because of all of this, I am glad Haverford Township is trying new traffic calming measures. But, this remains a cautionary tale in my opinion, of what happens when too much development comes to an area over time.

I will open this post with you can’t be all things to all people. Those who say they can are selfish, narcissists, or even delusional. So why pretend? Just be yourself, yet people pretend because they think that is what your are supposed to do.

Life is too short to be other than yourself. Take off the veneer and get real.

On the 4th of July I posted something to my personal page. I decided to share it here today.

I called it the care and feeding of relationships:


I will preface my comments with this isn’t directed at any one person in particular or any group of people in particular. These are just some of the things I think about. (now people are saying uh-oh, she’s been thinking again. )


People grow and change as they age. Sometimes for the better, sometimes not so good.

I am really lucky because I literally have friends from like grade school on. And I value my relationships but as I age, it’s just human nature that I don’t think perhaps some people value me as much in some cases, or they have a perception of who they think I should be when I’ve always been just myself .


I have always told people I’m an acquired taste. And I’ve always been opinionated. But the difference between me and a lot of other people you might come across in your life is I am a real person, I don’t just play one on social media.

But I think a lot of people don’t put time into their relationships. I try to stay in touch with people, but sometimes I fall flat at that goal because life gets in the way and if you don’t hear from me, it’s not because I’ve moved onto the next best thing, it just means I have stuff going on in my own life.

It’s just like I don’t get particularly upset if I don’t hear from certain friends all of the time, because I know they have stuff going on. I don’t think any of this used to bother people as much before social media. I think well social media does this great job of bringing people together, it also leaves us with somewhat unrealistic expectations at time or the need for instant gratification.

I think from time to time we all have stuff going on in our lives. And I think one of the things that I don’t particularly care for in our modern society is people are often very quick to dispose of other people and there’s also the thing that a lot of people don’t have conversations anymore. I think it’s gone the way of letter writing.

Conversely, in this new disposable world in which we live, it does smart when you realize that there are some people you don’t hear from in real life because you no longer have a use. But I can’t control them. I can only control myself. Just like the people who literally only call to unload their lives, and with some of them you are waiting for them to simply ask you how your day is going.

Life evolves, and people with it. I merely wanted to simply say I appreciate the people in my world.

And I do.

But then there are things I do not appreciate.

One thing I do not appreciate is when someone randomly says to people that a donation in kind I made to a local non-profit vis-à-vis taking event photos at an event is something I was compensated for. I am not a Freddie Freeloader. I buy my own event tickets, sometimes even sponsorships in addition. Most recently I have done this for Surrey Services for Seniors. I sweated it out at their recent garden party friendraiser/fundraiser. I took hundreds of photos, and I think in the end, they got close to 350.

I was an “In Kind” partner as a matter of fact. I was not paid, it was volunteer. That amount of photos taken edited and delivered within a week can cost a non-profit thousands, depending upon the photographer. I used to be a second to a professionally trained photographer for weddings and big events. So in a sense I was this woman’s apprentice. I loved learning, and will never say I am other than a digital photographer who seconded a professional photographer. I do not shoot events professionally, what I do these days is for pleasure and as a donation. Friends, former friends, and frenemies have benefitted from my occasional assist.

I like taking photos at events because it gives me a break from small talk, honestly. I do not have the staying power for that these days as much as I used to, and I do not drink much. So it keeps me busy and moving around and having fun capturing moments of an event that are not staged or posed. People like having those memories. I also did this for Surrey at their Holiday House Tour, and for the 2024 event, I took photos as an additional donation, purchased four tickets, and a sponsorship. I paid and donated my way.

I used to do the same for quite a few years when the Tredyffrin Historic Preservation Trust was doing their fabulous house tours. I used to photograph the houses going on the tours from the exterior before the event and preview party. My love of cool old houses and churches is nothing new, it was heaven to do it. And my husband and I would buy tickets and be a sponsor. Like Surrey, it is an organization I believe in and a worthy cause. I was not paid to take photos, etc.

When I take photos at Life’s Patina events and do little videos, I am also not paid. I do it because we buy tickets to the event and love the events and non-profits they highlight. The team at Life’s Patina will tell you I also go for the felted mice.

Believe it or not, sometimes people do things for the right reasons and to pay it forward.

It’s like when people have tried to say I am a compensated blogger. I am not. I have never been a compensated blogger and in case none of you have ever noticed, I pay extra for this blog to NOT have ads.

Recently we placed an Uber Eats order. It was hot and no one felt like cooking. Our delivery person asked me if I wanted to sell my house when I opened the door to retrieve the order. And gave me a real estate flyer.

I was not rude to this person, and I have been in the past when unsolicited realtors have headed my way door knocking. But I have to tell you when you allow yourself the little luxury of delivered groceries or food, you should not be solicited for other things as well. It is creepy and unprofessional. And if we wanted to sell our home, do you really think we would choose a random delivery person?

Other things irritating includes when I am posting about something happening locally. And I am talking about and posting things that others should be posting about in their communities.

And they don’t like my opinion. So they castigate and criticize. Ok, well, I guess that is their right, but f they can do it better, write it better, why don’t they?

Other things I ponder are the reactions of women my age to the next chapter in the HBO MAX Sex in the City called And Just Like That. Not only the reactions, but the time they pour into the reactions.

OMG yes I am talking about a TV show. Get over yourselves.

I have finally had the lightbulb go off in my head about why women now who loved Sex in the City don’t like And Just Like That.

People expected the new series to be just like the old series, only that’s not possible because the story is not frozen in time, it’s fluid and people age. The actresses have aged, we the viewers have aged. And while the series still has the unrealistic to die for wardrobe/shoe/handbag/domiciles, the story line of the series has grown up. All of the women are encountering age-appropriate scenarios with partners, spouses, dates, coworkers and kids that actually happen, even if not necessarily to us or with Hollywood magic.

Life happens. And people have been talking about things that are awkward in this new series and it’s because they’re awkward when they are situations in real life as well.
Life happens and I had to laugh at the most recent episode with the Karaoke machine and Miranda’s painful attempt at “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and then the landscape garden design guy singing “Bette Davis Eyes” – talk about a couple of songs that right out of my soundtrack of the 80s in my head…. and included in songs I played over and over.

The new series is covering middle age etc. None of us are 20 somethings anymore even if you are devoted to injectables and procedures and guess what? It’s ok. I actually prefer the current age in spite of irritating things like occasional joint pain. We are free to be ourselves without incrimination except occasionally from ourselves.

So three seasons in I still like the series. How long will it last? Who knows, but I’m enjoying it while it’s here….and the fashion and apartments etc that go with it.

But most of all I am laughing at the women who devote time every week to talking about the series like it is life and death. If you don’t enjoy it, don’t watch it. They are kind of like the people who announce they are leaving a Facebook group and never do.

And then can we talk again about social media and the people who freak out on your personal page if you are not to their expectations of what you should be posting about? Meanwhile people (women) are posting anonymously about who does the best vasectomy and that is normal? Alrighty.

Life is a meandering thing, for sure. What I am also discovering is how many people in the US seem completely down in the dumps 24/7/365. The solution in part? Watch less news. Either you voted for him or you didn’t and either way, there he sits ravaging democracy until elected officials wake up.

I have had some friends get snappish with me for sure because I don’t want to discuss this ad infinitum. Surprise! I can’t change it, I can only go on living and hope good will out int he end. But hey, you do you, and I will do me.

Speaking of me, the other amusing thing is I am 61. So I am at a stage in my life where I have worked my whole life and can slow down some. It doesn’t mean I am a worthless bobblehead. It’s a personal choice I have earned the right to make.

And that extends to interest or lack thereof in local issues. My job is not to cover all of your local issues. I am interested in what I am interested in, which is definitely not everything everyone else in interested in a lot of the time. People need to find their voices in their communities, except for maybe Willistown because it has gotten so crazy there again people are starting to wonder when the crews with the special white suits are going to show up and start carting people away.

So is this enough of a meander for you people on a July afternoon?

police back at krebs house in east whiteland this afternoon

So we still don’t know really why, but law-enforcement had a play date at the Kreb’s house in East Whiteland again today on Conestoga Road. I have been told that today’s visit were the Chester County Detectives.

We first noticed earlier this afternoon this notice on East Whiteland‘s Facebook page:

Then this showed up as an update:

6ABC was out at the scene and I caught it on the 5 PM news. I don’t know if anyone else is covering this or not so I know residents are grateful for 6 ABC being there. more importantly residents are very grateful in East Whiteland for law enforcement and their handling of this. It has been a little unsettling for residents near that house, which is understandable.

Kevin Krebs has TWO separate court dates coming up.

I still haven’t seen anything posted to state whether or not Mr. Krebs will be facing Federal charges as well since the media reports also report the involvement of Federal law-enforcement agencies.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was more media on this. And when I listened to the 6ABC reporter, I was somewhat gob smacked at the number of guns that the family turned in to law-enforcement that belonged to this man.

Also a related issue is I am sure we would all like to know why West Chester Borough Councilmen Bernie Flynn and Brian McGinnis allowed the Mayor of Downingtown to speak at a June meeting, but did not allow West Goshen Sunshine to ask a couple of simple questions?

West Goshen Sunshine attended this public meeting and got up and tried to speak at public comment to inquire as to the timeline of events at the No Kings Rally. She was interested in when Mr. Krebs was detained and arrested, and where that was in the whole scheme of the event that day. She also wondered when elected officials and event organizers were told about this?

Allow me to quote her:

The irony is hard to ignore: in the same town that held a “No Kings” rally, I was silenced at the Borough of West Chester meeting last night. Councilmen Bernie Flynn and Brian McGinnis have clearly crowned themselves gatekeepers of free speech–deciding who gets to speak and who doesn’t. That’s not leadership. That’s arrogance.

Fortunately, not every official in West Chester in as bombastic as Flynn and McGinnis.

West Goshen Sunshine is well spoken and polite. I am appalled, but not necessarily surprised by the behavior of these two gentlemen in West Chester Borough.

I am not some Luddite, and I understand there are certain things the public are not going to be privy to at this stage of an investigation, and the same goes for West Goshen Sunshine. However, lots of people want to know what the timeline is for notification concerning this incident. Let’s face it if someone hadn’t blown up the original social media video so that we all saw it , how long would it have been before we knew this incident even happened?

I have felt since this happened that politics, not necessarily law enforcement tried to keep a lid on this.

Now to me, it would’ve made sense that the event organizers wanted everything to remain calm that day, because face it if lots and lots of people there on that day had known they just arrested a man with weapons it might have been chaos. And law enforcement did a tremendous job in a huge crowd.

However, I also wonder if politics kept this from getting out until that social media video from TikTok or whatever was released everywhere so we all saw it? And along those lines until people like myself and others started publicly thanking law enforcement, it seems like a lot of politicians weren’t.

Law enforcement has been amazing through this.

Anyway, if you listen to the media reports, it looks like there was at least one more weapon seized today and computers and who knows what else. People are still asking questions like was Krebs egged on by some group or something like that or did he always act alone on his own?

This has been a sad and scary situation. I hope that as Krebs has been a guest of the county that he has perhaps been getting mental health treatment? Because anyway you slice it, what almost happened that day and what they found in his house after that is not the act of a rational human being.

more doing the open space thing in east whiteland?

Soooo….last year I had posted about this odd triangle parcel off Old Swedesford/Swedesford Road in East Whiteland. It looks like it was sold at some point in 2024 and I got a note today from someone that says:

Keeping you updated. Looks the property sold in October. We just noticed some people out there holding what looks like site plans. We really hope they aren’t planning on putting some commercial property in there in such a small residential community.

Coincidentally, it seemed to have shown up on an East Whiteland agenda for this week. Last evening‘s meeting as a matter of fact. 3a.

If anyone has any answers as to what is happening with this property, people are all ears. What seems to be happening on the video snippet that I am about to share, is a potential acquisition by East Whiteland Township to keep it as open space, which would be great because there are residential neighborhoods back there. So I don’t know if that would mean passive open space leaving it wooded or creating a more park like setting in part of it maybe throwing in a small playground? If what said on the video is true I would say that some township residents over there have possibly dodged a bullet, right?

Before properties were sold last October is above – and note technically there are two parcels. I only had the bigger parcel information from before it was sold in 2024.

Below are both parcels, large and small. I have also included a little screenshot of the bare bones schematic of ChescoPin, so people can visualize the area better.

Where the new property owners potentially selling to East Whiteland have correspondence sent is 120 Pennsylvania Ave Malvern PA 19355. Now that address is in the Borough of Malvern that’s tucked out of the way. But it’s whose address that is that I found potentially interesting and will anyone else?

That area is back on the other side of the train tracks from what you know is King Street or the main drag of Malvern Borough. It’s back off Bridge Street and that Old Lancaster Road area. Of course that address comes up on Malvern Borough’s website.

Life is so interestingly connected, isn’t it?

Anyway, good on East Whiteland if they’re stopping development there by a land purchase. If this is what has happened this of course means the open space referendum is working some more, doesn’t it? I guess now the East Whiteland Open Space Committee or someone review things?

in radnor, environmentally friendly turf fields and other fairy tales? neat!

So if you want to visit the 2025 Time Machine for the Main Line, you will remember back towards the winter into the early spring there was a lot of chatter about the much lauded Agnes Irwin School in Radnor Township right? Nasty glare bomb lights? A dog and pony show at a Radnor Township meeting by the school and a former member of the police force now Agnes Irwin security living in a house the school owns that used to belong to someone’s parents I went to school with many moons ago? (Ahh yes I remember it well….or so the line from an old show tune goes….)

I don’t think very much happened with regard to the lights. And I don’t think Radnor Township backed up the neighbors much at all?

Anyway, around that time, it also came out that they were proposing turf fields. I should say proposing turf fields again, because Agnes Irwin has run into issues before having to do with turf fields haven’t they? All you have to do is go do an archive search of Main Line Media News…. or ask people who remember.

So if you are a neighbor of Agnes Irwin, are they treating you the neighbors with respect? I mean it’s been bad enough the past couple/few years as parking everywhere seems to have become normal rather than occasional, correct?

I do not recall that the lights seemed particularly better now? I mean you would hope by now they would’ve at least changed the kind of bulbs so it was less glare bomb right? All should be shaded down too, right?

So with the lights, etc. that’s one giant demerit for them in the environmentally, friendly aspect isn’t it? Isn’t it well documented what lights do to the flight paths of migrating birds and nature? And interrupting human sleep cycles?

So now everything is all torn up because they’re putting in turf fields. I also seemed to recall that the turf field they are creating on the playing fields that run alongside the one side of those residential streets off of Conestoga they abut goes to the creek, doesn’t it? We all know what it takes to “recycle” turf fields, correct? Isn’t it like places where they just dump the old rolls of turf they don’t like really recycle them per se do they?

Artificial turf can contain PFAS right? It also breaks down over time, releasing microplastic particles into the environment. Irwins has been saying that their turf is carbon neutral? OK so that might mean they’re using recycled plastic maybe? It still doesn’t negate all the other potential issues, does it? Sorry not sorry I don’t believe the carbon neutral turf actually helps the environment or mitigates climate change. My opinion is that this is the Emperor’s New Sporty Clothes. But you can bet that it’s really really expensive, right?

It’s ridiculously hard to recycle artificial turf. That is the reality. It ends up in landfills, doesn’t it? If you Google, you can see pictures of like fields or piles of it in landfills.

Something else is it contributes to something they call “heat island effects.” So it’s not real, it’s fake so as opposed to grass, it absorbs and retains more heat. Which means that Agnes Irwin is going to possibly heat up residential neighbors as well isn’t it?

Artificial turf also contributes to loss of habitat for nature and wildlife. Turf doesn’t need to be watered per se, but again what happens when water even rains runs off turf? Pollutants, right?

So Agnes Irwin is trying to build its legacy to itself. In my humble opinion, they’re desperately trying to compete with the other private schools in the vicinity. Can they compete? I don’t know. My opinion remains that their obsession over the years with turf fields says to me they are concerned with the wrong things. Athletics are great, but is there a true balance with academics?

And if you notice in one of the pictures that were taken from a public road with no trespassing, you will notice there’s a split rail fence between the school and the public streets and neighbors, right?

I think that the school needs to put up a more permanent kind of fence which cuts down on cut throughs. You know like a 6 foot wrought iron looking fence and screening landscaping that is properly and consistently maintained? The reality is them putting in fields like this means they’re going to have to make them pay because they are that expensive.

Other schools with fields like this will often rent their fields, I think they should spare the neighbors by putting up a more permanent fence so the neighbors don’t have any more unintended consequences to deal with and they do already having a private school as a neighbor.

So a good fence might make for good neighbors right? (And it would cut down on those pesky cut through and parking all over neighborhood streets, wouldn’t it?)

Agnes Irwin has its turf fields being built, so now it’s time for them to stop being selfish jerks to the neighbors and do better, don’t you agree?

As for Radnor Township, people are complaining that they changed the route of the Garrett Hill 4th of July parade when hello perspective? This is kind of the stuff that matters in the bigger picture, isn’t it? I mean to me the whole thing with these turf fields / glare bomb lights and Radnor Township kind of reminds me of all they haven’t done in North /West Wayne about stormwater management over the years , doesn’t it?

And no matter what you think, these fields are not environmentally friendly, and shame on those involved. And at the end of the day, turf fields also aren’t particularly easy on human joints are they?

Just another rather predictable and to a contentious issue in Radnor. It makes you wonder when residents will actually matter again or should I say all residents?

summer sunday pasta

Google for the creamy lemon zucchini pasta recipe. I used the All Recipes version of the recipe.  I signed up for I guess recipes from them and this one looked good.

It’s a keeper.

I added a little more liquid than the recipe called for and I used half-and-half instead of heavy cream and also added a little more garlic and a little bit of onion minced up. I also used white vermouth because I didn’t have any white wine open.

I will note I never made this recipe before and when I went to Google to find everyone the link, I discovered that Bon Appétit and many other places have similar recipes.

It is time for the annual unveiling of the Declaration of Independence everywhere as July 4 is nigh.

Allow me:

In Congress, July 4, 1776

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America, When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. So here we are in 2025. It’s been a very long year and it’s only July 1.

We live in a fractious, infighting country, and I had to ask myself today an honest question. My question is simple: are we living up to what are forefathers fought, blood, and died for? Are we what they envisioned just months away from our Semiquincentennial?

I don’t think we are. And I think we are turning into an embarrassment on the world stage. Do people still hold us in high regard in other countries or are we people to be pitied or scorned?

Since when did our freedoms become subjective and don’t tell me they’re not because we all know they are. We are a country founded on the hard work of immigrants, with no respect for immigrants a lot of the time.

One of our more challenged rights are our First Amendment Rights. As a blogger, I’ve certainly experienced that over the years. And it is sad because people in this country have lost the ability to have conversations. You can’t respectfully disagree, you have to destroy the other person. We see this destruction attempted on social media every day. People will tell other people that I am a bully for standing up for myself or choosing not to interact with certain people and how is that being a bully? If you are of a different opinion compared to someone else, are you then supposed to be a doormat for their ire?

Is this post all about me? No, it’s not but as a blogger I am opinion based so these are the things I think about. Today I am thinking about it in context with what we all see happening in this country.

I think about all these people that like to stand up and tell the next guy or gal that they are a better American than someone else. What makes them a better American what makes someone else a worse American? What makes someone judge, jury, and executioner on what it is to be American exactly?

When was it we were all supposed to be the same? Didn’t our forefathers fight for us to have freedoms and rights so we didn’t have to be exactly like the person standing next to us?

I’ve almost stopped watching and reading the news in a lot of cases because it’s not good. And I’m not going to change the world. I can only be myself. I’m not going to go march in protests not because I don’t think people should have the right to protest or shouldn’t protest, it’s just I don’t feel that in my bones. What I feel in my bones is a deep sadness and weariness to be an American.

I love the history of this country in all its imperfect glory. And today, I wonder what kids are actually being taught? Are they being taught the true history or the sanitized versions of our history that other people are more comfortable with and what is that saying regarding if you don’t reflect upon your history, you’re doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past?

In this country today, are we on the precipice of repeating some of the most heinous mistakes of our past?

OK, I had to go look the quote up and here it is:

I know people who legally immigrated to this country who have left or or thinking of leaving. Like those of us who may be a few generations in or a couple of hundred years in to living here, they are disillusioned and sad.

We have shitty healthcare. Sometimes I wonder if we are living the robber barons of our past? Currently on HBO it is being romanticized in the series called The Gilded Age, but it was a time of strife and wide disparity between classes, inequality, racism, monopolies, unethical business practices, exploitation of workers. sexism and wow sounds like 2025? Captains of industry or feudal lords much?

(I guess this is where someone will roll up and say I’m either a communist or socialist and I am neither. I’m just being a student of history.)

I don’t pretend to have answers. I’m just kind of speaking my truth out here in the wilderness.

But when you celebrate the Fourth of July this year, try to remember why it exists and don’t be a bunch of asshats.

Be an American the way our forefathers intended us to be. Hoist the flag, and remember to bring it in if it rains.
