are an amish woman and her children really missing from honeybrook in west caln? since the end of may, no less?

I am sad to acknowledge that as is just like the case with any other part of society where us regular “English“ live, apparently Amish communities have their own issues.

Today a post I keep seeing shared on Facebook by people from the areas further out in the county about something that happened in the West Caln section of Honey Brook which took me down a rabbit hole that needs attention.

Here are screenshots of the post I originally saw :

The Amish are broken down into various sects in various areas of the country where they have settlements.

Different sects have different Bishops and other elders for each community. I have heard before from people that are either related to Amish, who left the fold so to speak or who know Amish that not all of the sects are the same. As a matter of fact, can it be said that some of them are more cult- like the others? And basically, if you are in an Amish community, you can’t blow your nose without the Bishop’s approval or disapproval.

Katie Zook, 40 and her children Daniel, 10 and Elizabeth, 6 were taken May 28th, 2024. The details are on the screenshot of the flyer I posted. The Zook farm is located on Compass Road and the children were scooped up off of essentially a next door neighbor’s farm on the same lane of their parent’s farm from where Katie the wife was taken.

There are no photos because they are Amish, who keep to traditional Amish ways. And yes, you’re right if you’re thinking, it sounds like a Lifetime movie filmed in Canada and supposed to be like Pennsylvania Ohio or whatever, it does.

One source said to me that they could have possibly been moved to either an Amish settlement somewhere in Ohio or a settlement near Clare Michigan if not in PA any longer. Now this is just supposition because I have and they have nothing concrete. I am not in or near an Amish community. but I have verified that this wife and these children were indeed removed at the end of May.

The husband and father is named John Zook. He is Amish, so he’s not about going to the English authorities, and in case you don’t know, we all are the English. I’m sure John Zook also believes given the fact he is Amish that God will provide. I don’t think in this situation God is going to provide unless man helps with the tools they have available. So here we are.

What I have been able to piece together from those who know John‘s family and some who have left the Amish sects that this was a happy family unit, and this boils down to religion when religion turns ugly.

Family members say there was no abuse or discord. Family members and friends also say there was nothing wrong except John Zook from what I have been told by someone who knows his brother wanted to leave this Amish sect and church they were currently in and go to another church.

What I was told is he and his son were indeed going to a new church, but the wife and the daughter were going to the old church. I don’t know what the issue was but apparently John Zook had not been happy with this church for a few years. and the thing about being Amish is you can’t just up and move church just like you can’t just up and move house. I mean, it happens when Amish from one community married Amish from another community. John Zook’s wife Katie, who is missing with her children actually grew up in Quarryville and someone said that her father is a church elder of her birth sect.

I have been told that Katie Zook did not wish to be relocated so what happens now? Are they trying to pressure John Zook into doing what they want by this cruel act? And they might have their own laws that they live under but is that really OK given the world in which they live? So what happens if John Zook doesn’t do what they want? Do his wife and children live elsewhere under different names and will she have to marry someone else entirely? Or would she then live a life of some kind of indentured servant somewhere and raise her children?

I think the other problem that this church has with John Zook is some of his family members, his close family members, were shunned by this sect for leaving. I don’t know if they left Amish life all together or what the story is, but I do know that Amish orders are really tough on those who leave their communities for whatever reason.

And all of these folks basically live in the same area :

I also pulled the property information from the two addresses on the flyer :

I am not trying to be disrespectful of the Amish people. But this post just made me sit up and take notice and people are sharing it all over, especially people in Chester County who live fairly close to these various Amish communities.

I have been told that these kidnapping things happen. Sometimes it’s for good and sometimes it’s for things like this which in my humble opinion are mean and selfish reasons. Families should not be torn apart for ungodly reasons should they? And seriously if this is all true? I wouldn’t stay in this church either. It’s wrong.

If you have any knowledge of where Katie Zook and her children Daniel and Elizabeth are please call any of the following numbers:

610-273-7102

717-442-5115

717-587-9952

I think this also bothers me because you know we were all raised that the Amish were God-fearing simple folk who did things with faith and tradition in mind. I am having a hard time with this because this is anything but God-fearing and lovely, it’s barbaric and horrible. And it’s sad that the religion of this sect seems to have torn a family apart and I think that’s wrong, don’t you?

If you know where Katie Zook and her children are, please let somebody know. And here’s hoping police somewhere take an interest in this if all of this is proved true.

now THIS is chester county – a delightful discovery (and an estate sale.)

We went today to the Sales by Helen sale in Kennett Square on 640 N. Walnut Rd. We got there late – there were things I wanted that were garden related but it was just too hot to move earlier.

I think it was like a horde of locusts descended upon the sale because the place was pretty stripped when we got there, which was fine because I don’t need anything REALLY, but I did want to see the property which was AMAZING!

The house is not a 19th or 18th or even early 20th century Chester County farmhouse. It was built in 1973 and the barn was built in 1998. (Here is listing while it exists.)

I marvel at this crazy beautiful property because it was built in exacting detail to look old and to be utterly Chester County. Not a McMansion of plastic or bad stucco, but a stunningly beautiful place. It looks old, yet it’s perfectly modern and turn key. You could move right in.

I got a basket full of red napkins for Christmas, mostly Ralph Lauren. And a couple of bars of expensive craft soap in their wrappers, a porriger, a wee Santa and an old tiny china doll for the Christmas tree….for $10!

But again, the best part was seeing this spectacular property on conserved land. Just shows what can be built. Imagine if developers trampling Chester County had actual talent and imagination? We might get more of this and fewer McUglies.

so many questions….still

Sigh…I am really conflicted about posting this. What “seeds” or what kind of seeds are being planted exactly?

One is because I know all of the horrible comments which will be directed towards me which is total BS anyway. Questioning this does not make me a racist but it does make you wonder if I would be so judged if the color of my skin was different? There I just said it. It has to be said because if this person looked exactly like me I would still be asking the same questions.

Secondly, because I actually like U.S. Representative Chrissy Houlahan and will be voting for her like I have since I first met her a few years ago. BUT this HAS to be looked at.

I found comments on Chrissy Houlahan‘s Facebook page that I’ve taken screenshots of because it PROVES people have concerns and questions doesn’t it? A lot of you always wish to lay this at my feet and call me horrible names and I feel the need to point out LOTS of people are concerned aren’t they? And then there are questions on FJ Instagram and if you deviate from the “message” the sycophants rear up and it always gets ugly fast and the fauxmer does nothing to ask for civility does she?

Farmers in Chester County are up in arms about this ridiculously large grant ($657,000) given to a FAUXMER with a track record NOT of fabulous crops and farming practices but for grand plans that are a lot of buzz words, glam shots, and PUBLICISTS and what farmers do you know who have publicists? Most of the farmers I know are trying to figure out how to make their money last until their crops come in and make improvements on their farm and survive. They work from before dawn to well past dusk don’t they?

But the other thing is this is $657,000 of taxpayer dollars and this person is NOT someone who has proven they can do anything other than talk a good game or do I have this all wrong? Shouldn’t you need a proven track record for this kind of money?

And can we talk about the grant application which has an address of 6730 Germantown Ave Philadelphia PA 19119. That is no longer a place that Farmer Jawn has a leasehold on and it has been quite a while. The business now there is NOT affiliated with her or the Farmer Jawn and Friends Foundation Fund or any of her gigs – no store, no tea, no honey, no food no nothing.

I don’t understand how an application could be sent to Washington DC without viable addresses. And I also don’t understand why Westtown School didn’t apply for the grant because they actually own the property and isn’t that ODD ? Usually if your information isn’t 100% stand-up on an application for something like this you get rejected right? So what’s with the special treatment?

📌 “We are incredibly grateful to Representative Chrissy Houlahan for her unwavering support and successful advocacy in securing a federal grant of $657,000 for FarmerJawn. This generous funding will enable us to renovate our aging barn and incorporate hydroponic facilities, allowing us to expand our mission of teaching essential agricultural skills and entrepreneurship qualities to the Chester County community. With this investment, FarmerJawn will continue to thrive as a vital contributor to the local agricultural landscape, offering innovative, sustainable solutions and opportunities for continued growth,” said Brandon Ritter, COO of FarmerJawn.📌

So wait, who is this person?

Where are the form 990s? Why is the entry on PA’s Charity site still incomplete? They got non-profit status in like 2022 right? So there are employees?

This grant recipient has had all these ideas and plans, a lot of which I HONESTLY think are great but where is the execution? The inclusiveness? And the great James Beard Foundation gave her an award? For what? And again how many farmers do you know with pricy publicists?

What about the Germantown Avenue store folded and what happened to the supposed spa that was supposed to happen down the street a couple of doors from 6730 Germantown Avenue? Mae Belle or whatever?

Where is the tea business? Where is honey that no one really knows where it originated from but did know it was not very good? And what’s with the Elkins Park Farm?

Back to the grant. So it’s supposed to be for the barn and hydroponics right? I think that’s a great idea and I love being able to get a good hydroponic organic vegetables in the middle of winter, but this is someone who doesn’t have any or much experience with this, do they? And then there is this chatter that now the grant is about workforce development? Is that true and if so, is that kind of a bait and switch? And Westtown owns the property so why didn’t they apply for the grant? Why is Westtown so silent on everything having to do with this person since they gave her access to the land? Is it landlord’s regret? Does she pay rent? If she pays rent how much rent does she pay and is rent deferred while the land lies fallow? Who were the other people who applied to be the farmer there?

And then the comment on Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan‘s Facebook page about vendors not being paid? And the screenshot the author of the comment leaves shows someone who works for George Didden Greenhouse? Is that true? That’s terrible if so isn’t it? Is she square with all other vendors past and present?

And then there are the people who like to say well why doesn’t somebody just talk to her? Have you seen what happens when anybody tries to talk to her? There’s regurgitated self promotion and dodge ball and a publicist but where are straightforward simple answers? The other thing is does she make everyone feel welcome?

And also Chester County does actually have minority and female farmers so where is THEIR recognition? I guess the difference is they just practice their craft with diligence and little faux fanfare, right?

The whole Farmer Jawn COULD be a great thing BUT what will actually happen and until Westtown is certified organic WHERE specifically will things be coming from?

So many questions…and it has never been just me asking… The Farmers of Chester County deserve our best. That’s all I am saying. And if Farmer Jawn wants to be counted among their numbers, then she needs to be more accepting and respectful of those who came before her and who have existed before her and work hard every day. and she needs to start being straight with people not just giving soundbites and cute pictures on tractors.

Soooo…. She took over Pete’s produce in 2023 as a lease with Westtown and it was announced late 2022. It takes 3 or 4 years for land to lay fallow before you can get organic certification right? So where will all of this food / produce coming from? I didn’t think where she leased in Elkins Park/Cheltenham was big enough or viable enough to produce everything?

And like I have said ALL ALONG if she ends up farmer legit, I will be honestly thrilled but right now I think the outlook is still shady.

My opinions are bought to you courtesy of the First Amendment.

they are planting more development in farm country

Yesterday we headed out in to Chester County to go visit a peony farm in what I knew growing up as Brandamore. Like Glenmoore it is actually a very old unincorporated community in Chester County. Brandamore is north of Coatesville. Sometimes when I see people referring to Brandamore today, that either call Coatesville or Glenmoore.

Anyway, we headed out Reeceville Road off of the 30 Bypass. The 30 Bypass is insane in the rain, and what was even more insane were the people not moving over for an ambulance with lights on.

I’m also going to say something that might lead to believe I have fallen and hit my head, but I haven’t. It’s just in this location it works because there’s enough space.

I’m talking about the traffic circle/roundabout at Route 82 (Manor Road) and Cedar Knoll Road/Reeceville Road intersection. I actually think it really works here because there’s enough land for the circle to function properly, as opposed to what they were trying to propose at 352 and King Road a few years ago in East Goshen/East Whiteland. And no houses were taken from what I understand.

This is a mostly pretty drive with rolling hill and farm fields except the farm fields are disappearing rapidly, and all you see are more developments coming.

All of these developments are going to bring how many more people to an area that doesn’t even have a hospital close by.

As we drove by bulldozers and other heavy earth moving equipment I wondered what PA State Senators and State Representatives and the PA Governor were doing to protect these areas?

The short answer, of course, is nothing much because then they would actually have to get off their asses and enact an act of the state constitution to update the woefully decades outdated Municipalities Planning Code of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

It’s so sad to watch what is happening to a county known for agriculture and equine culture. The school districts can’t handle this growth, first responders can’t handle it, the rest of the infrastructure is stressed, and there aren’t even hospitals to serve all these people.

Chester County is being destroyed. And state elected officials are allowing it.

It’s the farmland disappearing act.

will chester county residents rise up to save the west chester growers market?

As I posted yesterday, the West Chester Growers Market is once again at risk from a developer and West Chester Borough.

As I said yesterday, it’s literally like Groundhog Day.

So there’s this developer who presented the same plan about developing affordable (“attainable”) housing to West Goshen like the day before they made a pitch to West Chester Borough.

And again in West Chester Borough, it’s a developer drooling after that Church Street lot where the West Chester Growers Market is. One of the longest standing and truly wonderful farmers markets in our region, and they’re threatening it again. What is it about the church street lot that makes every developer have to have it ?

Also interesting about this other than the fact that the in my opinion back door presentation was done the day before West Chester Borough in West Goshen. Very interesting that both municipalities share the same solicitor, right? That’s kind of a coincidence that really isn’t, isn’t it?

So yeah, this developer is shopping. This idea all over the place correct? Give them the land they’ll build you supposed affordable housing. I have a bridge I can sell you.

And I know the solicitor isn’t going to like my opinion because they haven’t liked my opinion for years, have they? But the one thing they can’t remove are our constitutional rights to have an opinion and ask questions, correct?

And they said West Chester Borough has to make a decision in four days? Four days for a life, altering decision for residents, and one of the oldest farmers markets in the area? Most reasonably intelligent elected officials would walk away from such a proposition, but who knows what will happen with the Borough of West Chester, because that place is perennially slightly shady about stuff, right?

This is not about truly building affordable housing. This is just another way for developers to get projects built.

Look no local government should be assisting a developer with financing, correct? In the end is this all just to support the developers and those developers support?

And  regarding the numbers of “needed” units, no one has asked them to produce the data that lead them to that number, have they?

If West Chester Borough or West Goshen really needs/wants “accessible housing” then apply for the state funding to do it . Or get a 3rd party 501c3, like SELF Inc. purchase an appropriate spot and create housing – same BS is happening in Montgomery County and Bucks too.

Supposedly, there are West Chester Borough Council meetings this week. Their website isn’t very good but I know this will be discussed, and people are entitled to public comment. People should check the agendas carefully because this is also something that would have had to have been properly advertised ahead of time, and have you seen it properly advertised anywhere?

https://west-chester.com/

I will close this post with another snippet from the West Chester meeting this week. Listen and decide for yourselves. If I lived in West Chester Borough, I would get all my friends and neighbors at every public meeting this week to protest this. if I was running the West Chester Growers Market, I would be consulting with attorneys to make sure rights were protected, can’t you agree?

Thank you to West Goshen Sunshine for making us all aware of this, and also thank you to Cara at Hello West Chester for her coverage as well.

it’s groundhog day in west chester borough

HT to West Goshen Sunshine for alerting all of us to this latest episode of stupidity by West Chester Borough.

Once again West Chester Borough is trying to develop the parking lot at Church and Chestnut for a fake “attainable” housing development and destroy the West Chester Growers Market? And I can tell you that I believe development there wouldn’t either be “attainable“ or affordable. In my humble opinion, it would just be another hot mess for this over developed town.

Presentation and discussion at 1:03. Assholes. And yes I just said that. Out loud.

Go to 1:03

It’s like literally every few years they have to have some latest greatest stupid development plan to destroy one of the regions most established and well respected farmers markets, and the neighborhood where it’s held.

The Borough of West Chester doesn’t need more development they can’t handle what they already have.

They tried this in 2013:

While the market may not bring huge revenue, tall buildings or more parking spaces to the Borough of West Chester, they do bring something of great importance:

COMMUNITY.

Please if you live in the borough, contact your borough representative and ask them to consider these factors as they make their decision:

  • This market hosts 2000+ people every Summer Saturday
  • They provide a sense of community, where neighbors talk to neighbors
  • Their market acts as a drawing card to downtown businesses. Customers frequently shop there after leaving the market.
  • If the lot is developed, there is a chance that the Growers Market will no longer be able to serve the community.
  • So please, if you value the sense of community and supporting the local farm fresh foods that our market has brought to West Chester, contact your borough representative and tell them what the market means to you.
  • Remember, they represent you.

Click here for the Borough Manager: smetrick@west-chester.com

The Borough Manager’s phone number is: 610-344-3346. His name is Sean Metrick. He came from the Borough of Narberth, and he should know better.

Even if you don’t live in the Borough, but if you patronize the West Chester Growers Market or work in the borough or have friends in the borough I urge you to contact West Chester ASAP.

Tell them the numbers of “needed” units is wrong, ask them to produce the data that lead them to that number. They have to prove that this isn’t just to support developers etc.

Somewhere along the line we have to start saying no, and meaning it for development that is removing things that are integral to our communities.

I don’t know why West Chester Borough seems to think this is a good idea every few years but it’s time for people to stand up now and stop this before it goes further.

This is not about affordable housing. This is about some developer getting a project and making money. This is about coin. Nothing more, nothing less and I can have that opinion.

#savethewestchestergrowersmarket

real farmers matter.

Look! It’s that person who is increasingly elusive in Chester County known as a real farmer.

This guy doesn’t farm on the roof top of the Whole Foods in Exton, and he doesn’t have a glam squad that sets him up for photo shoots, wardrobe, hair, and nails. He also doesn’t have a publicist to tell the world that he’s a farmer. That is profession and his calling, and you can tell by what he does that he’s an actual and real farmer.

This is a farmer like many others who works hard. I think undoubtedly could use a big juicy federal grant, but you won’t see him wishing to collect a James Beard award because he would probably look at you funny.

So politicians and others take note. This is a real farmer on a real tractor in a real field.

And if you folks out there know any real farmers, you will know that not only do they work hard, they are fairly down to earth and humble. They will always tell you about their crops, but they won’t brag. They are genuine.

Support your farmers. They are all important. Even the ones without glam squad and professional publicists. Think of them as agricultural influencers without social media, only blood, sweat, and tears, and Mother Nature.

We also need more real farmers and less development.

Thanks for stopping by.

what kind of farmer would she prefer?

This popped up on NextDoor. Mind you the platform itself is the social media for literal dummies site. I don’t know why, but this is the type of people it attracts who post the most.

This woman is sharing this post from literally a farming community in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Of course a lot of the comments about this have disintegrated to stupidity in politics. Calling her a leftist Karen who’s probably vaccinated was one of my favorite comments when I shared this on Facebook that I removed. Politics has nothing to do with us. This is plain old, ordinary ignorance, and very humorous to me because politics, don’t come into it, considering where the poster is from which is rural Lancaster County.

I have always been grateful when I see a hay truck or a tractor on the road because it still means there are farmers around in spite of all of the development which pushes us all out and artificially inflates land prices.

And I have to ask this woman what kind of a farmer would she rather have? One who does glam photo shoots sitting on tractors etc and has a publicist or an actual getting hands dirty in the dirt farmer?

And speaking of farmers, again how many do you know who have a professional publicist and seemingly tons of time on social media making bold claims?

I am also just astounded that for all the people who are deserving and kill themselves working towards a James Beard award and she gets one for what exactly? If it’s a choice between an actual farmer on a tractor and a fauxmer, I will go for the real deal. Kind of like giving all puff and no substance (or track record) a huge federal grant when that could be a farming game changer for more deserving folks, right?

And so we are clear, I don’t care about the race, creed or color of a farmer. I care about those rare individuals who are actual stewards of the land and not just chin wagging selfies and reels on their self perceived fabulousness.

One of my favorite farms in Chester County is Queen’s Farm in West Chester. It is owned and operated by the Yin Family. You can buy produce from them at the West Chester Growers Market and other local markets.

Lancaster Farming: Farmer’s Taste of China Grows in Chester County
Philip Gruber, Staff Writer

Let me know who some of your favorite Farmers in Chester county are. I’m thinking maybe we should start to feature some of them so people know about our farmers. You know the ones who don’t have time for photo ops and professional publicists.

Thanks for stopping by.

A real Chester County farmer. Farmer Zuohong “Ed” Yin of Queen’s Farm, West Chester, PA

face palm moment potential?

$657,000 for FarmerJawn and Friends Foundation Fund to revitalize a barn and create a hydroponic agriculture facility for innovative agricultural practices

I wrote about this a few days ago and I don’t think anybody paid attention to it. But then the email came out today and as a constituent of Congresswoman Houlahan, I received an email announcing who got grants in the area.

So she has gotten over $650,000 in a grant on a farm where she technically really can’t farm yet because it’s not lain fallow enough to be organic, right? And she doesn’t own the barn she’s getting the grant for The Westtown School does, so that makes it technically their property, so why didn’t they fill out the grant forms? After all, they are a nonprofit with a track record and form 990s etc. aren’t they? Does she now have organic status?

Please note the address in the letter above for the Farmer Jawn Friends and Foundation Fund. 6730 Germantown Avenue Philadelphia, PA 19119.

What is the problem with that address? She doesn’t rent that location anymore it’s a spa. Not affiliated with her because I called and asked. And the lady who answered the phone, remarked that she had returned mail addressed to that entity to the senders.

How can a person who has yet to truly farm on land that is leased or rented but has to lie fallow for a couple of more years in order to get organic certification get this kind of coin now? That is life changing money for a farmer. But this woman doesn’t have a track record although she has loads of media sound bytes , so how can she get such a large amount of money?

She has gotten other money before.

Look if she ends up being the real deal, I will apologize. But now all I see are lots of questions and my big thing is, how can someone who hasn’t actually farmed yet where they are, and doesn’t own the land, and the land is owned actually by another nonprofit apply for such a big grant and get it?

And at the end of the day, the address and stuff used for the grant application and for this nonprofit arm of her concept, goes to an address where she no longer has a lease, so how does that work?

I will note again that you don’t have to like my questions or my opinion but it’s not illegal. As taxpayers ultimately we pay for these government grants, so I think we deserve to have answers.

So many questions, so many questions.

still not fan girl of chesco jawning so stop asking

One of the things people always send me are things having to do with this “Farmer Jawn.” I thought I should set the record straight and say I am still not buying what she is selling, so kindly stop asking. She loves her socials so I am not breaking any rules by sharing screenshots. Everything I have screenshot is PUBLIC.

And I think this is still like the Emperor’s New Clothes at Westtown. I think this is smoke and mirrors and I also think eventually I will be able to say I told you so.

And she can sit up there in her domicile now in West Chester or wherever she lives and call me whatever pejorative term she wishes or say whatever she likes. I am entitled to my opinion until this woman proves me wrong, my opinion stands.

Text received today

I don’t hate this person, I don’t know this person, I don’t want to know this person. This is solely my opinion on what I have seen to date and that includes going back to Philadelphia and where is the actual business there these days?

The Constitution of this country, and the First Amendment allow me to have my opinion. My opinion is not based on race.

I don’t judge farmers by race, creed, or color. I will note that farmers in Chester County PA come in all shapes, sizes, nationalities, colors, and sexes. Farmers work hard. Farmers deserve respect.

But Fauxmers are something else entirely. If this woman proves me wrong I will own it. But thus far? She’s sadly proving me right it seems?

So I have to ask is it true last year when the mowing finally got done to cut the weeds, it was actually done by some Westtown School employees in part? Is The Westtown School paying her to farm? is she paying The Westtown School rent? How is the rent calculated / covered while the land lies fallow pending the organic of it all?

Why does The Westtown School not seem to ever answer any of these questions? Is The Westtown School setting her up to fail so they can just sell the land for development down the road?

The Westtown School has a “Dean of Communications” named Anne Burns. She never answers her phone. Her email is anne.burns@westtown.edu

And yes, I’m probably stating things that people aren’t comfortable with saying out loud and asking questions that people aren’t also comfortable with. But I’m genuinely curious because I’ve been out here in Chester County for a while now and I have never met farmers with the glam photos on farm equipment, and PR wizards, have you? Is this a new Bravo show waiting to happen?

So she can pose for photos with Governor Josh Shapiro and she can say she’s going to grow 1,000,000 pounds of food. But in the end, what will actually happen and why is her nonprofit registered to an address in Philadelphia where she doesn’t seem to have a business any longer? Why is her non-profit information incomplete on the PA Bureau of Charities website?

So I have not to date changed my opinion. Again, hopefully she will prove my suspicions wrong. But realistically I don’t know if that will happen.
