apparently complaining about the postal service is un-american ?? their customer service doesn’t think so…

Yesterday I finally had enough of mail going missing, arriving opened or damaged, and so on.  So I blogged about it.

I have received many, many comments and not just the ones I have published on my blog.  Here’s one  I received off blog:

I mailed a couple of things a couple of months ago. It never got there and was never returned. The guy I spoke to said they have had problems since they go through Wilmington. My question is why did they have to change things?  🙁

I totally understand how the commentor above feels. I am actually sitting on hold for the United States Postal Service in Washington DC, not that I feel it will do any good.

My mail , even local mail, also gets routed now through Wilmington, Delaware. I find it ridiculous that is a Pennsylvania resident, my mail goes out of state before comes back in state. 

Other commenters mentioned similar issues of mail not arriving, arriving damaged, arriving reeking of cigarette smoke.

But then there are the commenters who feel they have to defend the United States Postal Service at all costs. I am exaggerating , I don’t understand how hard they have to work , and how they now have to pay for some of their benefits and so on.

Here’s  one of my favorites, because it had absolutely nothing to do with what I was discussing in my previous post:

Perhaps you need to learn something about the USPS … it has to sustain itself since it does not receive US tax dollars. However, it has Congress critters who are determined to kill it since USPS has to ask Congressional permission for virtually any action to become more efficient or to streamline. On top of it, USPS is the ONLY entity that has to prepay retirement liabilities for retirees decades in advance … for future employees who are not even born yet. That was a bon-bon that Congress enacted during the Reagan years on the march to privatizing the USPS. Of course, private companies are not going to maintain service to Podunk USA. After all, for those places,UPS hands off the packages to USPS since USPS, by law, must deliver to Podunk.

Funny, I don’t remember writing about their retirement benefits or “liabilities”. And I’m sorry it has to sustain itself as a business and it is supposed to be a business? And as a customer isn’t my part in sustaining this “business” dependent upon the service received and delivery of my own mail? And yeah, Podunk. Sorry, I kind of live in Podunk so I hope that’s not too dreadfully inconvenient to deliver mail to us?

Then there is the man who keeps writing in that I am exaggerating and basically he knows this because his mail is perfect. HUH?

I am not exaggerating. My mother sent me a card, nothing fancy just a greeting card… Over a week ago. She lives in Center City Philadelphia.  Still hasn’t arrived.  Someone else has sent me something from Holmdel, New Jersey twice in two and a half weeks. Neither times has it arrived. Things mailed to me from Berwyn and Wynnewood have also not arrived. 

A package marked fragile containing a gift for someone arrived yesterday looking like it had been kicked around like a soccer ball. And that was sent some degree of “Priority” mail.

I have a great postmaster at my local post office, and the gentlemen who handle our residential route know where everyone lives and do a great job. But they are only as good as the mail that the actually reaches my local post office. Obviously there is some sort of problem with where my mail goes before it reaches my post office.

So it has been a while since I started this post.  I called the hotline number for the Office of the Inspector General for the United States Postal Service this morning. Hotline phone calls are answered M-F 11:00am – 3:00pm EST 1-888-USPS-OIG (1-888-877-7644).

The customer service woman I reached took close to an hour with me on the phone going over delivery issues and opened, destroyed, and missing mail. I have opened a case and she also gave me the number to consumer affairs in our area which I’m going to share with you my readers. That number is 215-863-6060.

This woman I spoke with tracked the path of some of my mail that she was able to track using basically the tracking numbers that a couple packages arrived with.  And she agreed there was an issue with my nail because I wasn’t just telling her about one type of mail going missing routinely, it’s a little of everything , bills included.  

I told her honestly that I was a blogger and I had written about this on my blog. And that I was doing a follow up post. I told her about the comments I had received, and she was very polite and didn’t discount anything I was saying. She also told me if mail is arriving and it reeks of cigarette smoke that means my mail is sitting somewhere for longer periods of time then it should be. She said people smoke, but for me or anyone to get mail where the odor is pervasive and strong and lingering it means that your mail was sitting somewhere. For quite  a while. And I have read this complaint in groups I belong to.

Maybe this hour out of my day will amount to nothing, but I hope it will amount to mail reaching me better and reaching my friends and neighbors having issues with their mail delivery as well.  

I think it is absolutely ridiculous that they used to sort or mail through Southeastern PA, and now it sorts  through Wilmington Delaware. This woman also suggested that we contact our Congress people. So Ryan Costello tag you’re it.

pnc bank is so disliked web pages are devoted to them and not in a good way.

I never knew until today that there were entire websites devoted to hating and bashing PNC Bank. There are things like PNC Sucks , a whole slew of complaints on Consumer Affairs and RipOff Report.

I also realized today that I am still waiting for the “retail escalation specialist” Tracy St. Clair from PNC Bank to return a phone call.

I had contacted the bank at the end of December 2014 after a couple of frustrating occurrences. Actually I had contacted them about one of the other occurrences prior to this date.

First there was the joy of walking into a PNC Bank branch to open a business checking account. Only to be told as an existing customer check in hand that I had to come back on another day. If they advertise that they are full-service how come they are not a full-service bank? That account went elsewhere and the commercial banking twerp I was put on the phone with that day spend the next couple of days arguing with me via e-mail and then checking out my LinkedIn profile. Very professional.

Then shortly after Christmas before the end of the year I paid off my credit card with them. It wasn’t a huge balance, but I paid it off in it’s entirety. I paid it off via their online banking system that told me the exact amount I needed to pay to pay it off that moment in time and have it be paid off. Only I came back to check the account and discovered an obnoxious after the fact finance charge. I understand the theory of debt and interest rates, but when a bank tells you via its own system what you need to completely pay a balance off right then and there that should be the end of it.

I tried calling PNC on December 31, 2014. After being stuck on the phone for about 40 minutes at two different times in the day without speaking to a real person, I went and contacted them via social media. I was in short assured I was valued as a customer and sure enough the first week of January 2015 I received a letter dated December 31, 2014 from Tracy St. Clair retail escalation specialist. She provided a toll-free number of 877–631–8998 and an extension. I called her, and I’m still waiting for the return phone call and in between the first week in January and now I’ve contacted PNC for their social media customer service again and they assured me almost exactly a month ago that Ms. St. Clair would be calling me.

For me it is the principle of the thing. Don’t advertise that you are customer friendly and small depositor friendly when you really don’t give a crap about your customers on a retail level.

I don’t think PNC consistently makes an effort towards customers any longer unless you are a multimillionaire captain of industry.

This of course makes me sad because I have had a PNC Bank account since my college years. But I want to financial institution that is with you through thick and thin and you don’t seem to have that in this country much at all. I know PNC and the casual disregard of customers is not an unusual occurrence.

ciabatta: save your money

Chef Gordon Ramsay or Chef Robert Irvine would have an absolute field day with Ciabatta in Malvern. We just had the pleasure of paying for among the worst delivery meals we have ever had.

I admit it, I am picky when it comes to eating out in any form because I like to cook. But this was seriously some of the worst food I’ve ever had. And it was not inexpensive.

We ordered a pizza, Lobster Ravioli, and Fettuccine Alfredo with crab. With tip it was a $50 delivery.

The pizza is photographed above. That was what it looked like with “extra” cheese. It had the consistency of a cardboard frisbee meets a hockey puck. It was overcooked, oversalted, and ended up mostly in the trashcan. The lobster ravioli and the fettuccine arrived as gelatinous and virtually flavorless lumps.

Seriously, I put a fork in the fettuccine and I was able to lift the entire meal out of the plastic like it was a lollipop. Even the little bits of garlic bread include it with the pasta entrées were virtually flavorless. Pasta dishes like we ordered are supposed to have a sauce that is thick but the sauces should flow. It is also supposed to have some flavor to it, and the seafood should always be very fresh.

We have tried this place before and we kept wanting to give it another chance. But this is definitely a takeout and delivery menu we are throwing away.

Truly, I hate to be mean about a local business, but I am at a loss how in 2013 they were the Best of the Main Line and Western Suburbs courtesy of Main Line Today and voted Best of the Best in 2014 by County Lines Magazine. They have the customer service part down as they are unfailingly pleasant and their delivery people are very nice. The food is just bad. Or maybe it’s inconsistent and every time we order it’s bad.

Ciabatta is the perfect place in desperate need of a makeover. Calling Chefs Ramsey and Irvine…..

Ah yes, Sunday. The day of the week when everything is supposed to be calm and relaxing and peaceful.

Except during election season. Then Sundays are for political robo-calls. As in the long annoying ones you can’t disconnect your telephone line from. They just keep playing until the brain washing via telephone is over.

We got one of those calls earlier today. I tried to hang up and disconnect it three times. It is one of those calls that even talks to answering machines and won’t disconnect no matter what until every last pre-recorded bit of stupidity has been spouted.

The call was something about Corbett. I don’t really care which party was doing the calling, we are on political call overload! They occur all during the week, people should at least get Sundays off! Actually, why can’t we opt-out of political robo-calls permanently if we choose?!

And don’t even get me started on the attack mailers from both political parties! My mailbox is filled daily with the oversized glossy offerings from the political Hatfields and McCoys.

Enough already. It is a political turn off. This inundation of political negativity is not an enticement to get out and vote, in fact it causes the opposite reaction.

I called the number back that called us. It was a Google voice number for someone named Kathleen Bowman and the Malvern Victory Center. There is a person with the same name who works for the PA GOP

And again, I don’t care which party is making the calls, they are ALL an intrusion.

political turn-offs

All yes the season has arrived. Not fall, but the season where we open our mailboxes to far too many political mailers. There is no subtlety involved as it is an almost daily barrage from both parties. My position is, save a tree don’t flood my mailbox. I also am of the mindset that I prefer not to get my email inundated either.

Today we received a giant expensive multi–page glossy mailer mailer from the Pennsylvania Democratic State Committee. For Manan Trivedi.

Now I have met Dr. Trivedi, and I found him to be a very nice person, but he’s not the person to represent me. I did not feel when I lived in Montgomery County that a man who was from Berks County could really represent my interests in Congress. I still feel that way as a Chester County resident.

I also want to rid myself early of all the glossy mailers that are going to clog up my mailbox and recycle bin. So since it is September and this is my first one I called up the campaign number listed on the glossy mailer. The lady who answered the phone at 484-329-7907 could not have been more pleasant. But some guy who must’ve been her supervisor decided he wanted to speak to me. I’m not going to publicly shame this person because everybody deserves a chance and I respect people that want to work on campaigns and I know it’s tough. But I will say that somebody else should take calls from now on, this gentleman should not be on the phone.

I tried to explain to this guy why Dr. Trivedi was not a candidate for me. I also tried to explain to this guy why I don’t want to receive these mailers. I did say to him however if he really wants his candidate to have a good showing in Chester County, a public position on things like the Sunoco pipeline and eminent domain would be of interest to Chester County voters.

He then tells me how they went to a couple community meetings and they were “looking into it.” Since March, no less. I said what is there to keep looking into? I asked if his candidate was in favor of eminent domain? Does his candidate understand our fears about these pipelines and what they could do that legitimately terrifies residents out here? I asked if his candidate understood how a lot of us were on wells and how scary an idea that is when somebody’s talking about fracking and putting pipelines through communities along with potential dangers to all natural water sources and wildlife?

If you want a topic that has grabbed hold of Chester County residents regardless of political party this is it, right? He decides he then wants to tell me all about Ryan Costello and Ryan Costello’s flaws.

I didn’t call them to debate the other candidate. I also don’t like to be talked down to by a campaign office. And I completely abhor people who use poor grammar on the telephone and tell me that they are a Montgomery county resident and he understands how I feel. I live in Chester County, you couldn’t possibly understand how I feel as a Chester County resident, so unfortunately that attempt at political empathy fell far short.

I did tell him that I feel sorry for political candidates because of the gerrymandering which has occurred in the 6th Congressional District of Pennsylvania over the past years. But when push comes to shove, I want someone more local to me to represent me in Congress if I can get it. And while I might find someone to be a very pleasant person, it doesn’t that I find them to be the best candidate for the job to serve my needs as a Chester County resident.

I will be blunt, I also find Obamacare a hot mess. I feel the last few years of national politics have been embarrassing at times for any American no matter what political persuasion you are. When it comes to Federal level politics, you very rarely get the opportunity to vote for the “local” guy. And my local guy is Ryan Costello. And I will vote for him gladly. But because I think Dr. Manan Trivedi is a nice person, I think his campaign offices need an education.

I see no problem with people being excited and very supportive of their particular candidate for whom they are working. But they need to adopt more of a “the customer is right” attitude. They need to learn the subtle art of turning people to their position without getting irritated on the phone. After all, there are quite a few weeks between now and election day. And I won’t be the only phone call their offices receive.

I have decided that one of the things that is going to make me decide on candidates this fall is what kind of a position do they take about pipelines and gas companies like Sunoco in Pennsylvania? How do these candidates feel about eminent domain? In mid-September, a candidate’s political office should not still be saying that the candidate is looking into something. They should have a position and be able to clearly state it for the candidate. The Wolf gubernatorial campaign, for example, is very clear on where they stand about pipelines. And I can tell you quite honestly, I can’t good conscience vote for Tom Corbett a second time. Especially given all the donations he gets from oil companies, right?

I might be a Republican, but I do believe in a two-party system. I am also an inveterate ticket splitter. But a two-party system in Chester County is also about 17 shades of ridiculous once again thanks to the infighting of the Democratic Party of Chester County. Truthfully, to that end, I actually feel sorry for the Trivedi campaign because as a Democrat candidate he and other Democrat candidates may very well be tainted by the same brush that is the in-fighting in Democratic politics right now in Chester County.

dear sunoco: told you the natives are restless

I have written a couple of times now about Sunoco’s disturbing march through Chester County. I think SuNOco should get the frack out of Chester County.

I have also decided as a matter of personal choice to try to boycott Sunoco and their products. I just can’t in good conscience support a company trying to destroy what people call home in Chester County. Corporate America seems to respond to their bottom line, so why not? We still have freedom of choice in this country no matter what Sunoco is trying to do.

So…there is this great new website. I have nothing to do with it I just think it is terrific! The website is called eastbootroad.com

And speaking of Corbett our illustrious (*cough*) governor, the May primaries are almost here. Make these pipelines an election issue. As a Republican I can tell you I will not be voting for Corbett. How can I given what is going on with Sunoco in Chester County?

Regardless of your political persuasion if you are affected by SuNOco, take it to ALL of the gubernatorial candidates of either political party in Pennsylvania. They all have social media presences, get on them. Raise the profile of sneaky SuNOco.

Again I look at it this way: what has SuNOco done for us? The answer is NOTHING.

Say NO to SuNOco. Pass it on.

saying no, asking for peace

I didn’t want to say anything, but I feel I must. I am NOT getting involved with the whole brew-ha-ha over Flash the beagle. Please STOP posting comments about THAT issue to my blog and the CCR Facebook page.

This is my blog and my page and I reserve the right to NOT be involved with every animal issue in the tri-state area. I am taking a break from dog rescue issues. I am tired of all the extremes of emotion and how nasty human beings are to one and other under the banner of saving animals.

I am sorry if that disappoints some of my readers, but please respect that I don’t want to be involved. Yes, that family is connecting all the dots when it comes to guerrilla social media tactics, but what is it they hope to accomplish by totally destroying a non-profit? And can it be said it is all well an good to say publicly on their page that they want people to be respectful but what happens out of the eyes of social media is different isn’t it?

Some might find this confusing, but let me make it simple: yes I have written about the Chester County SPCA’s issues a few times. However, I have never said I want the organization shut down and would not support such efforts. What I want for the CCSPCA is reform. I am hopeful with Pat Biswanger at the helm of their board it will happen.

I am not going to speak negatively of Main Line Animal Rescue. I am not going to speak negatively of Bill Smith. He has devoted his life to animals. I am NOT getting involved other than to say destroying a non-profit with a proven track record of saving at risk animals is wrong. Attacking people who chose to support this rescue is as wrong as attacking those who support rescues like the Chester County SPCA, Morris Animal Rescue, the Humane Society, the ASPCA, North Shore Animal League, Finding Shelter, ARC of the Hamptons and all the smaller pure-breed and cat rescues that work hard every day for animals.

I urge everyone involved here to calm down and try to work it out because big picture is if you support animal rescues and their missions you will try to work it out.

But I do not care to be a party to this negativity. I believe in animal rescue. Asking for reforms is one thing, destroying a good organization is entirely another. They are out for scorched earth, and that makes it about them, not the animals….even the dog they are protesting the removal of.

the death of traditions in chester county

One of the things I have always loved about Chester County are the traditions. Things like the horse shows and horses, the farms, the carriaging, the crafters and artists, barn sales, flea markets and church sales, ballooning, and the independent spirits.

But today I mourn the loss of those things. They haven’t all disappeared over night, but if we as residents don’t start standing up in our communities and telling municipal governments to pay attention to us and not just the developers, we will lose what helps make Chester County so special.

I am going to re-visit the case of Upper Uwchlan and the Smithfield Barn. I will note in case Upper Uwchlan’s manager is feeling vindictive after this post that I have NOT spoken to the Smith family about this situation in a while, it is merely that people are TALKING.

I have been told that the manager (who came from Coatesville and why do I point that out? Well Coatesville always ends up in the news for not so nice things, don’t they?), met with the Smith family finally after the media picked up on the story at the start of the new year? I had heard that and was hopeful, and well what did I hear recently? That the manager had not seemed to follow through on what they had discussed? What do kids still call someone like that? A welcher? Do I have that right? Or is this just a rumor and he really likes the Smithfiled Barn and acknowledges how much his township folks go there and to places like that Carmine’s , right? Maybe they will have a new rule against pizza and wings down the road too?

So what does this manager named Cary Vargos, get out of this? Is he doing this doing this for the developer coming back to his township which shall remain nameless? The developer who will share borders with the Smithfield Barn Farm? How are those bog turtles and percing stuff going?

Of course then there are the rumors bandying about concerning municipalities that want to tell people how, when, and what time they can hold the humble garage sale and isn’t that just crazy here in the land of the free?

So I have to ask who would be hurt by allowing Smithfield Barn to have a set number of barn sales a year? Is it possible that this township manager doesn’t know barn sales are rural America’s garage sale and a deep rooted tradition? Is Upper Uwchlan going to morph into one of those individual freedoms stomping municipalities that next puts a million rules on garage sales? Auctions?

I mean obviously Upper Uwchlan government has some sort of identity crisis because they allowed the crossroads village of Eagle to grow up to be Barbie’s Lego dream village didn’t they? This is their jurisdiction right? I mean it is good to know CVS can do other architecture, but still.

When you go through there you are also reminded of the development when you look at Upper Uwchlan’s shiny newish township building. It is not as grandiose as some I have seen, but it is a testament to the present and all that developments have built isn’t it?

I hate to pick on this township manager, but I just don’t get why he wants to be the squasher of local traditions do you?

The reality is Smithfield Barn is beloved by locals and those farther afield. Barn sales are a real part of country history and tradition. That makes them a positive ambassador for their municipality. Townships can’t buy the good publicity and PR generated by happy people and goodwill towards neighbors, can they?

But the country isn’t so country any longer is it? The country has been taken over by developers who don’t plant crops in the beautiful farm fields of Chester County, just plastic mushroom houses that give off the smell of hot plastic in the summer.

Take for example another sad thing: has anyone been by what was that huge empty former working farm on White Horse Road in Charlestown Township I guess it is?

I was a passenger in a car going past that last Saturday and it made me want to cry. It is slated to be a new development and it looked like a battlefield. Demolition equipment on site and they had just basically raped the landscape and all you saw were felled trees lined up like dead soldiers from a Civil War battlefield reenactment. It was shocking and sad.

The pace of development in Chester County is somewhat terrifying at times. Nothing ever seems to be a restrained size or scope. These projects are huge and homes squished so city close together that you know residents will live crammed in like lemmings. And the crime of it is, these people don’t seem to know any better.

Then there are the things that amuse me. Like for example when people in developments in Upper Uwchlan refer to themselves as living “on the Main Line” or being from the Main Line. Uhhh no, I actually grew up on the Main Line and these people are actually living in Downingtown. And it is o.k. to say you live in Downingtown. These are like the people who say they live in Chester Springs because that is how the developer marketed certain developments, only are they Chester Springs? Not so much.

Developments change the landscape and the attitudes. Do any of these people really know the satisfaction and joy of planting their own gardens? Or do they in fact live in Stepford where all geraniums must match and grass must be “just so”? Do these people know the joy of standing outside and watching the hawks circle and cry out to one and other? And they all say they love horses, but then they don’t want to live near barns, stables, and local horse show grounds do they? And don’t get me started on traditions like skeet shooting, trap shooting, and sporting clays shooting. And hunting and fox hunting is best kept to those countrified wallpapers, right?

I love what makes Chester County just what she is. I am sad that traditions seem as if they are disappearing one by one.

I really hope people wake up before it is too late. Once the woods and fields and farms are gone, they aren’t coming back. Same with barn sales, country auctions, and honor stands at the edge of your local farm.

As good weather seems to finally be here, I encourage all of you to let people know about fun things happening in Chester County. Traditional things.

One thing I will not be encouraging people to be part of or attend is Upper Uwchlan’s “block party” on June 14th. Why support their efforts when all they do is kowtow to developers and sanitize communities against country traditions like barn picking and barn sales? Sounds mean to some, but I think they are being mean spirited to tradition.

But please if you have something fun you want to tell people about, let this blog know. Things I love are farm events, art shows, flea markets, First Fridays, barn sales, even swap meets and garage sales. Other things like strawberry and similar festivals, farmers markets, small businesses celebrating something.

Enjoy the day. It is simply beautiful out. Find your magic in everyday life.

more stupid human tricks

Yesterday I wrote a post about the Chester County SPCA and overnight I was inundated with comments and even a couple of direct e-mails. Most of which I simply deleted.

One of the comments outed the volunteer I alluded to in my post yesterday. Like I was hiding who it was or like they are some some awful person. I wasn’t and she isn’t .

My thing with this latest CCSPCA stupid human trick is simple:

The Chester County SPCA is a non-profit that supposedly exists for animal welfare. Is it even about animal welfare any longer? It wasn’t so long ago that political leaders came in and declared a new day and sweeping changes. Yet here we are a few months later and the news that keeps leaking out is worse than ever. And I am sorry but I have a BIG problem with a non-profit that uses local municipal police resources as “muscle”. I had a problem with it the last time too.

I think it is wrong.

Maybe because I just went through major surgery or because my mother has been in the hospital I am more contemplative and less tolerant. Trust me, when you feel like a truck ran you over you can get cranky and introspective. Even in a post-anesthesia fog you have plenty of time to think.

Or maybe I am just sick of stupid human tricks.

Did anyone else read the article about the historic barn that got torched the other day? The Daily Local says they are looking at arson and who does things like that? I love the barns of Chester County as you all know. I keep looking at the article photograph of a pile of cinders and rubble and am wondering if it is one I photographed. This is a hurtful, pointless, destructive stupid human trick.

Another stupid human trick are people obsessed with people in the hospital. I had someone track me down in the hospital that I am not close to. I tried not to feel like my space was invaded but the truth is I couldn’t. It felt like they were looking for something to talk about and I know that sounds awful. It was not the same feeling at all as when one of my very dear friends just popped in unexpectedly. I was so glad to see her as we had not caught up in a while.

As a human being I know what is important and what is the minutia that should be tuned out and released back into space to swirl like the unimportant nonsense that it is. Human nature is a tricky experiment and people disappoint. I have begun to release the disappointing people. I can only be responsible for my actions, not theirs. The minutia, their minutia is not my problem to deal with.

Their minutia = their behavior = their problem = their personal accountability or lack thereof.

So I am releasing the minutia. I am going to be selfish and concentrate on my own healing. I don’t need the stress and negative energy. I also did not design this blog to be a negative space. I designed this blog to be about my journey and whatever I wish to express myself about. A creative space.

We are all lucky to get up and breathe and live every day. And we shouldn’t forget that. Life is a gift and so is love.
